Donald Trump has slammed a recent 2024 primary poll as a “scam” after it showed that Nikki Haley is now trailing him by a mere four points in New Hampshire.

The 21 December poll conducted by the American Research Group indicated that 33 per cent of likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters support the former president while 29 per cent support Ms Haley.

“Fake New Hampshire poll was released on Birdbrain,” Mr Trump said on Truth Social, referring to his former UN ambassador by his less-than-endearing nickname for her.

“Just another scam! Ratings challenged FoxNews will play it to the hilt. Sununu now one of the least popular governors in the U.S. Real poll to follow,” he continued.

When Gillespie County Republicans conduct their primary in March, they will count votes in an ill-advised way: by hand, using scores of volunteers, without any machines.

Even if they can pull off their expensive, labor-intensive plan, they risk being sued by losing candidates or reprimanded by the state. And they may run up a huge bill of unnecessary costs.

“Hand-counting is a recipe for disaster,” said Bob Stein,

a political science professor at Rice University and election administration expert. He and most other experts agree on this, and studies back them up: The method is time-consuming, costly, less accurate, and less secure than using machines to tally votes.

The lead contamination in recalled cinnamon applesauce pouches that potentially poisoned at least 65 children may have been intentional, the Food and Drug Administration said on Friday.

The FDA has been investigating the lead contamination in the cinnamon-flavored applesauce products from Florida-based food manufacturer WanaBana since October.

The agency has homed in on the cinnamon specifically as the source of the lead.

A spokesperson for the FDA said that one of the agency’s current theories is that the cinnamon contamination was the result of “economically motivated adulteration.”

MTG expressed frustration regarding the recent exclusion of Trump from the Republican primary ballots in Colorado. The court ruled that Trump’s actions violated the Constitution, leading to his disqualification from running for public office again under the 14th amendment.

According to Marjorie Taylor-Greene of Georgia, she believes that the way her political idol is being treated justifies taking action to remove the Democrat and legitimate President of the United States, Joe Biden, from ballot papers in Republican-led states.

French authorities grounded a passenger plane carrying 303 Indian citizens on Thursday over suspicions of human trafficking.

The flight was on its way from the United Arab Emirates to Nicaragua when it stopped at Paris-Vatry Airport in France's Champagne country to refuel. Officials received an anonymous tip that passengers on the flight were being trafficked.

Multiple schools and institutions around Montana reported receiving bomb threats on Thursday, spurring evacuations and closures.

Alberton School, Browning Public Schools and Boulder Elementary School sent out alerts Thursday about threats made to their facilities, and law enforcement responded to threats to synagogues in Missoula and Butte, as well as three bomb threats in the Billings area. Some of the threats were paired with messages demanding monetary payments, according to the Missoula Police Department. The FBI said they haven't received information that the threats are credible.

A statement from FBI's Salt Lake City Office said they were aware of several bomb threats made to schools in Montana.

"The FBI takes these threats very seriously," the statement read. "While we have no information to indicate a credible or specific threat, we are working with our local and state law enforcement partners as needed. We urge the public to remain vigilant, and report any and all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately."

Tucked within Congress’ colossal annual defense bill is a priority a vocal group of Texas conservatives has long pushed: Using psychedelics to treat post-traumatic stress disorder.

The U.S. House voted Thursday to pass the annual National Defense Authorization Act, which sets the spending caps and policy priorities for the Defense Department. Included in the bill was U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw’s Douglas Mike Day Psychedelic Therapy to Save Lives Act, legislation that will direct the Defense Department to create grants for studying psychedelic treatments for active duty service members.

The psychedelic substances include MDMA; psilocybin, found in many species of mushrooms; plant-based therapies; and others. Active-duty service members will be able to participate in the studies if they get clearance from DOD and are diagnosed with certain post-traumatic conditions. Participants will only be able to use the psychedelics in a controlled environment with a therapist.

In what may be the first case of its kind in the state, central Florida prosecutors said Thursday they will seek the death penalty against a man accused of sexually abusing a child, making use of a new law that expanded capital punishment to sex crimes against children.

The office of State Attorney William Gladson, who prosecutes cases in five counties northwest of Orlando, filed a notice of intent to seek a death sentence for Joseph Andrew Giampa, who faces charges of sexual battery on a person younger than 12.

In a statement, Gladson’s office noted the “severity of the crime and its impact on the community.”

The House on Thursday passed the National Defense Authorization Act, an annual defense bill that will this year include an extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s Section 702, the controversial law that permits warrantless surveillance of foreign nationals.

The House voted 310-118 in favor of the bill just before congressmen left for Christmas recess. The annual national-defense bill was passed by the Senate Wednesday, and is now headed to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law. The final version of the NDAA authorizes $886 billion in national-defense spending, an increase of $28 billion over fiscal year 2023.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday again declined to block a Democratic-backed state ban in Illinois on assault-style rifles and large capacity magazines enacted after a deadly mass shooting in Chicago’s Highland Park suburb in 2022, rejecting a renewed request by a firearms retailer and a national gun rights group.

The justices’ action leaves the law in place pending an appeal by the National Association for Gun Rights, Robert Bevis, and his firearms store, Law Weapons & Supply of a lower court’s decision. It denied their bid for a preliminary injunction against the ban, as well as a similar ban enacted by another Chicago suburb, Naperville.

No justice publicly dissented from the decision. The Supreme Court also rebuffed the plaintiffs’ request for an injunction at an earlier stage of the case in May.

Illinois passed the ban in response to a massacre at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park in 2022 that killed seven people and wounded dozens.

The Protect Illinois Communities Act, signed into law in January by Democratic Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, banned the sale and distribution of many kinds of high-powered semiautomatic “assault weapons,” including AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, as well as magazines that take more than 10 rounds for long guns and 15 rounds for handguns.
