I can't be the only one that feels this game is mediocre when compared to Super Metroid?

You're not alone.

For those of us that grew up with the 2D ones, this just lost everything for me. Out of all the childhood favorites that transitioned to 3D (Mario, Zelda, Metroid,) they all got worse to me, but Metroid, by far, took the biggest hit.

Also, is this even retro?

If you want to go by the sticky's definition: just.

I can't be the only one who feel that Super Metroid wasn't as good as the original? I think it the original is that only game in the series that gave you a sense of exploring a strange alien planet.

The original is a good game, but I think it's ambitions may have reached beyond the hardware. If you have the time to sink into it and learn the map really well then I think it does offer something more in that regard. Super Metroid definitely has more enjoyable gameplay, though.

I don't think Metroid Prime is inferior at all, just different. The exploration feels alot more significant because entering a new area isn't as simple as just a color scheme switch it changes just about everthing that surrounds you. More intense areas, like Norfair feel practically intimidating. I think the controls were very well handled (though not perfect) and i think the overall design, especially the familiar bits like the doors, morphball transition, samus' suit and hud display, are fucking genius.

And just for shits and giggles if i had to rank the Metroid games I'd say it's:

1.) Super Metroid

2.)Metroid

3.)Metroid Prime

4 )Zero Mission

5.)Fusion

6.)Metroid 2

7.)Metroid Prime 2

8.)Metroid Prime 3

9.)Metroid Prime: Hunters

10.)Metroid Prime: Pinball

11.)That Nintendoland Metroid minigame

12.)Samus sleeping in Mario rpg

13.)Samus statue in Kirby Superstar

14.)Smash Bros.

15.) Metroid Other M

I enjoyed the Metroid Prime series very much though the transition from 2D to 3D made them feel like games that should be judged by different criteria.

Super Metroid had a fantastic soundtrack, though, so I would have to choose this one over the Prime series.

I haven't played Prime yet, but I'm playing Super Metroid right now and loving it. What am I in for in Prime?

Also, is the Prime Trilogy on the Wii any good? I want to play it, but the last Wii FPS game I played Farcry had fucking horrible controls and felt disorienting.

>What am I in for in Prime?

It's basically an FPS with platforming and a good setting. Has the usual Metroidvania mapping but I remember it being rather horizontal with a few vertical connexions and rooms. The levels weren't all on one height but I don't recall them every going across one another (the map would be difficult to look at otherwise but I'd like a 3D platforming game that went that route).

Personally I never finished it - I give it a go every so often. I never really understood why it got so much praise; I don't enjoy FPSs in general but I usually can see why something gets praise even if I dislike it myself. It might be decent if you enjoy that genre in the first place but it wasn't a special one that was an exception to the rule for me. I enjoyed the platforming and exploration though. I played it on GC (so I can't comment on the Wii controls).

Totally agree, the transition from 2D to 3D was painful. I am so glad to see 2.5D be a thing these days (like New Super Mario Bros) and it is alive and well on the WiiU (for platformers at least). I'd love to see more 2.5D "remakes" or reboots though, esp a Super Metroid style 2.5D Metroid game. Shit would be so cash.

Prime was good, and had a surprisingly good feel gameplay wise, but I'm with you, it was no Super Metroid. I even like Fusion better than Prime. :/

I just want Super Metroid to be remade with hi-res 2D sprites of 3D graphics. It would make the wall jumps a hell of a lot easier.

Fundamentally, it felt like a 3D action game with a heavy emphasis on exploration, one that happened to have a first-person camera; rather than, like you suggested, a traditional FPS. I played a lot of FPSeses before that time, and nothing that attracted me to that genre (the pace, the twitch) attracted me to Prime.

>I never really understood why it got so much praise… I enjoyed the platforming and exploration though

I think you just answered your own question. I probably put less time into it than you, but I really felt that it was good at immersion. The exploration and the first-person view contributed as much - or more - to that than the aesthetics. And after horseshit like Turok, it also managed to make platforming via first-person view at least somewhat palatable.

I see. Sounds like it's easier to appreciate when you can compare it to other games in the genre and know what it did differently.

>it felt like a 3D action game with a heavy emphasis on exploration, one that happened to have a first-person camera; rather than, like you suggested, a traditional FPS.

Fair enough. I think my opinion of it is mostly set on the last section I keep trying to get through and it's all filled with pirates. I enjoyed it enough to get that far but not enough to really care about going on.

I don't think "mediocre" is the word.

I like Super Metroid more, but Prime is still a very good Metroid game
