>The 5th game changing aesthetics might be just the studio trying to distance itself from the 4th game by taking away any visual aspect that might remind the 4th game.

Maybe, but 5 being an anniversary title, it still had Wild Arms 4's protagonists in it as cameos. So unless you mean avoiding the manga cut-in style for various cutscenes, or outward "adults are evil" vibe, I find it a bit hard to believe they wouldn't want to remind people about the fourth game (avoid the same mistakes, sure), when Jude and friends are right there. But then again, so was everyone else from 1/ACF, 2, and 3. Was a tad surprised there wasn't at least a reference to Sheyanne or Maxi in 5 though, but maybe the anime and manga were considered too distant.

Well that could be an interesting question to ask.

Looking at the franchise in general, i can say that the mobile game dying after 1.5 year it's not a good sign. Especially there, where it's full of people playing mobage.

We will only know for sure if someone digs up info from posts made by japanese consumers at the time in forums or other places for sure.

Another thing to take into account is the whole fiasco of western companies such as EA and Microshit promising funds for japanese developers at the time, in exchange for them publicly dismissing the japanese market. It may have cause a snowball reaction in the japanese fanbase of some games, studios and companies. And the consequences because of it might be growing even today, since a lot more of the japanese audience is either moving to PC, or abandoning video games at all. Even those embracing mobileshit are always avoiding cash grabs with famous brands, and only playing games from newer brands.

>Looking at the franchise in general, i can say that the mobile game dying after 1.5 year it's not a good sign. Especially there, where it's full of people playing mobage.

The way I kind of saw it with Breath of Fire 6, it could just well be that the brand and publisher just don't have the awareness with mobilefags that Square-Enix does. Square's kind of got the stigma for better or worse of being a JRPG company and quite a well known one, while people probably don't think nearly that much of Capcom or Sony. Capcom's had, what, Breath of Fire and Mega Man: Battle Network/Star Force? And Sony's main three being Wild Arms, PoPoLoCrois, and Arc the Lad. Also some other minor dabblings by both, but it's not like they've really tried to keep any of them very relevant in the years leading up to the mobile ones (though on the other extreme, there's something to be said against milking shit like Nintendo does). And then they essentially reboot Wild Arms and Breath of Fire as mobile games, without even porting the older games to see if there's interest there first? Just feels like they saw Square-Enix doing well at it and wanted some of that pie, like even an audience that would be apt to go "literally who?" about both still stood to earn them more money than their existing base on console or handheld. I suppose the real question is, how many people playing either were actually former fans, or did both cases anger those sorts over being tossed aside?

I still say Bamco has, at least in the past and in regard to Tales, had the right idea about mobile: giving the base there a few actual ports and some crossover titles to generate interest, but then telling them to go play the rest of the main games on actual systems if they want more, rather than shift focus to catering to them. Though, it's far less forgivable how they tried to nickle and dime them at the same time. Not even mobilefags with their shit taste in medium are apt to stand for shit like paying microtransactions to unlock save points, which the Phantasia iPort was heavily lambasted for, at least on this side of the Pacific.

I can tell from experience: Fate GO is so popular, that there are even arcade boots where they can play with their phones, real cards and shit. It also looks expensive, in fact i saw a guy in particular who was dropping cash like crazy.

>people probably don't think nearly that much of Capcom or Sony.

Sony never really wanted to invest money on JRPGS after the PS1 era. It's pretty obvious by looking at their ips. Now, since it moved the playstation HQ to California, i can almost say they won't even consider the genre anymore.

>without even porting the older games to see if there's interest there first?

Wait, didn't they port a few Wild Arms titles to the ps4 or something? I might be wrong, i stopped buying playstation since the ps2.

>I suppose the real question is, how many people playing either were actually former fans, or did both cases anger those sorts over being tossed aside?

Hard to say. Personally i don't like one of my favorite franchises ending up as a mobile game.

For games like Wild Arms and Breath of Fire, this look like one last "modern-day" attempt to revamp them and analyze how much people are still interested in them, while for more famous games it's just another way of milking money and with less effort.

>Bamco example

I'm not well informed on how Tales was doing at the time, but i suppose it might end up in the first case i mentioned above: to analyze if people are still interested and if so, deliver more proper games.

>Sony never really wanted to invest money on JRPGS after the PS1 era.

In Japan, Sony's always owned Wild Arms. It was the western branches that stopped giving a shit about publishing at the time, with SCEA ceasing to care after WA3, and SCEE after Wild Arms 1 (PAL never got WA2, 3 was published there by Ubisoft, and they never got ACF either). As to other RPGs, SCEJ did fund the continued existence of Arc the Lad into the PS2, Okage: Shadow King, Dual Hearts (or does that count as action/adventure?), Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud, and Tsugunai, so I wouldn't say PS2 was quite when they stopped caring about JRPGs. The Japanese branch, anyhow: SCEA only had interest in having their name on about half of those. Certainly right that they're probably long past the point of caring to keep having their own offerings though. Only RPGs I recall them funding for PS3 were Folklore and Demon's Souls (action RPGs). PSP had Wild Arms XF and PoPoLoCrois, both of which SCEA didn't give a shit about, and the latter of which seems to have been outright sold off as it's since been on phones and crossed-over with Story of Seasons for the 3DS.

>Wait, didn't they port a few Wild Arms titles to the ps4 or something? I might be wrong, i stopped buying playstation since the ps2.

I specifically meant that they didn't bother to port any of the older games (like 1 and 2) to mobile first. 1 and 2 did get digital eboot rereleases for PS3, PSP, and Vita, 3 got an eventual PS4 "HD" (IE: upscaled, trophied, and more expensive than the PS2 original is preowned where I am) PSN rerelease a few years back, and 5 got a PS3 PSN rerelease but only in Japan. I've heard before that XSEED supposedly wanted to try to port all the PS2 games to the North American PS3 PSN, but technical issues made it too difficult (could similarly be a reason why it took 5 until 2014 to get on Japan's PSN; 1 and 2 were 2006 and 2007 there).

Probably, new IPs for mobileshit don't cause the automatic rejection that famous brands do when they are turned into cash-grabs.

As for expending like crazy, the Japanese urban population are conditioned since their infancy into becoming gambling addicts and impulsive spenders. The country's economy practically survives on those behaviors.
