So…is this it, is this the way Nicholas Cage wants to end his career? By being in good movies again?

It sounds like it's based off of the HP Lovecraft story of the same name.
Long story short:
An extradimensional alien lands on a small farm and fucks with the inhabitants.
This story is the reason why I don't eat any food that is gray

Surprisingly close adaptation of the H.P lovecraft story. Some pretty alright effects, most of the acting is good with a couple of spotty moments, and Nicholas Cage taking a signifigant
pause to impact us with the method of his acting.

I think it got across the Lovecraftian basis reasonably well– "nothing in the universe will even notice humanity is even a thing". A number of scenes do suggest that Photonic Virus Thing showing more intent that just everyone being caught up in the side-effects of its presence, which was imho off. Everyone is supposed to die, or the sole survivor made irreversibly insane in proper HPL stories, too, meh.

Nigger-Man appears in ‘The Rats in the Walls’, and it was named after a cat Lovecraft had growing up. In one audio drama they made of that story the changed the cat’s name to Voodoo.

That’s not the worst offence the film makes: they cast a nigger as Ward Phillips – this was a pseudonym used by Lovecraft. They’ll probably try and play it off as a homage, but Lovecraft would be disgusted if he knew how they would choose to “honour” him in this film.
Die, Monster, Die! from 1965 with Boris Karloff, despite all its faults, is still the best adaptation of the story to date.

People can't seperate the art from the artist in regards to H.P lovecraft because there is no question about his attitude and modern progressives are terriblly hypocritical puritans. Nobody on the left is going to go through Edgar Allen Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue to start screaming about how the tell tale heart should no longer be read in elementary because there's little pay-off, it's hard to point out a consistant body of work that points to him being "un-pc", there's too much work involved in painting him a racist.
Same reason Science fictionsauthors like Marion Zimmer Bradley get a pass for being terrible pedophiles, it's not politically valuable to attack them. MArion Zimmer bradley was an outspoken feminist with a powerful voice. Even now her reputation is kept quiet or buried.
H.P Lovecraft was a brilliant writer who contributed a great deal to the field of horror. But he's also a big ole white guy who hated him some niggers. People want to enjoy his work, but there's that big black hole that surrounds him. If we want those kinds of stories, we will have to accept compromises, plain and simple.

What's funny about Bradley is that most of the stuff about her being a pedophile came out after she died and her royalties would have started going to her kids. And I believer her daughter was going to give a lot of it to charities that helped kids that were getting sexually abused.
But a bunch of people were still like
>hurrr now I can't read this book about king arthur because i'm so upset at the things the person who wrote it did
Next they're going to start putting background checks on little cards next to the books in book stores to make sure it's acceptable to read them.

All yep. It's somewhat amazing that a HPL movie even got made today, given the animosity being drummed-up in SF organizations.
Anyway, back to the movie– oh god did I love how that autistic kid really fucked things up instead of the plot-armor they always get. When I saw that stuffed t-rex being carried around everywhere, I knew and wished that the "be fucking stupid and run back to pick up the dropped toy" would be something nasty. And it was! \o/

That wasn't even close. The black guy was just as clueless and ignorant of the situation as everyone else. He literally took the place of the university observer from the first story. He had no impact on the occurences and did not discover, understand or realize anything more than anyone else did. I understand the very idea of black people existing sends you into hystericval fits of racist spasms and seizures, but be assured that the black guy is not the hero of this story.

The rest of you should watch some genuine Lovecraftian kino instead: Il nido del ragno/The Spider Labyrinth (1988): Alan Whitmore, a young American researcher, goes to Budapest to visit Professor Roth, with whom he collaborated on a secret project called "Intextus". Arrived in the Hungarian capital, Alan finds Roth whom, in panic, hands him a black book which he says should include information of the utmost importance.

Nah, sounds fucking retarded you mouth breathing fetal ejection, you look like a goldfish when you breathe they should put you in an H.P lovecraft movie about some kid who's mother fucked a fish and gave birth to a retard. Wait they did, it's called Dagon and it's basically your life story only with less uncle rape and molesting your younger cousins.
Fuck why don't you recommend 'Beyond dream's door' if you like bottom tier amateur hour garbage. Fucking film school dropout.

Movie opens with nice cinematic intro "OK, this might be watchable", nigger walks down the road. Thank god he doesn't play any role and you can skip everything with him in it. The movie itself doesn't really have this slowly increasing horror and madness of a HPL story. It's blunt and not subtle. The family is written poorly. They are angry and annoyed at each other all the time which makes you hate them and not care for them at all. Also they are stupid. In the morningn the brother and sister talk about that they have to leave the place. Then wait until night til they start packing. "Oh no it's dark, scary and dangerous."
I give this one a 5/10.

the acting in this movie is so bad that nick cage does not particularly stand out. if you're trying to convey that an alien presence has broken the minds of your characters you should get across that they're sane beforehand, but this just comes across like a bunch of flesh robots got microwaved and violated their warranties.

Why do people keep trying to make this into a film? This is the one Lovecraft story that can't get really be adapted well, because it's all about an incomprehensible color. Why keep doing this shit when there are better Lovecraft short stories that don't revolve around an impossible image? This is the fifth adaption! The Curse did it well enough anyway.

In the hands of competent, talented people they could adapt this story on a budget – successfully. The focus should be on the family and the tragic and horrific events that befall them by sheer, dumb luck. A slow burn psychological horror that focuses on the various family members slowly falling apart – mentally and physically.
We are in for a bumpy ride, I’m afraid; the director is already gushing about how he’s gonna adapt ‘The Dunwich Horror’ next.
