I just watched DW Griffith's Intolerance and holy shit I think it's the greatest movie I've ever seen. The whole thing is just larger than life and every cubic inch of it is jam-packed with meaning. Actually, it's the fourth silent film I've watched this weekend. Silent films are fucking great, you should talk about any silent films that you liked in this thread.

The neat thing about this particular cap is that the character in it had been played up as this total badass. He was called Two Swords, and he was personal guard to the king of Babylon. His introductory inter-title talked about what a mighty warrior he was, and in the first battle scene he's shown just mowing down Persians left and right. And then Babylon celebrates after having repulsed Cyrus' army, and during the celebration there's just this little two-second clip of Two Swords petting a bird. It's like Griffith threw it in just to make you smile. Two Swords doesn't have a major role in the Babylon storyline himself, but that little clip right there probably makes him the most memorable side-character of the movie.

It's definitely a good movie, but I only really thought the modern-day and Babylonian plot lines were compelling.

>A scene from the Babylonian Story of the film. In the battle for Babylon, Persians have entered the city. Unable to stop the advance, Prince Belshazzar (Alfred Paget) is to retreat to prevent capture. In a final farewell, the Mighty Man of Valor (Elmo Lincoln) embraces and kisses his ruler before turning to fight to the invaders.

Was DW Griffith /ourautist/?

The modern story was supposed to be the main story, the others were supposed just be there to emphasize the themes. Of course, the Babylon storyline was probably incredibly expensive to film what with the live elephants and the actual mile-long grand hall set built according to actual ancient blueprints, so naturally the Babylon storyline had to get a lot of screentime to justify that. I feel like the French storyline was just a buildup to the massacre scene so it could be juxtaposed with the Boy's impending doom, and the Judean storyline was of course purely there to illustrate the themes. So it's probably okay if only the modern story and the Babylon story really resonated with you.

The roadshow presentation for Intolerance would get so expensive which caused Griffith to have financial troubles for the rest of his life. He tried to recoup some money by recutting and rereleasing the Babylon and modern day sections of Intolerance as standalone movies.

The Fall of Babylon (1919)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010108

The Mother and the Law (1919)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010484

Both of these are special features on the Cohen media blu-ray release of Intolerance. I can't find The Mother and the Law on YouTube but I did come across The Fall of Babylon which is embedded in this post. The Fall of Babylon has an alternate ending compared to its original version seen in Intolerance. There wasn't any home media back then so it was very common to film movies with similar plot elements or different endings and release them in cinemas. Griffith would do that a lot, especially when he made short films for the Biograph Company from 1908 - 1912 where he was basically cranking out one or more short films every week.

If the Judean and St. Bartholomew's Day massacre portions of Intolerance were recut as standalone works they wouldn't be more than 20 - 30 minutes each.

Even Griffith's B movies were pleb filters. The man was an autist.
