Pentagon to change stance on Greenland – Politico

The US military intends to de-link the Arctic island from Denmark, the country to which it belongs

The Pentagon is preparing to make a “symbolic and operational split” between Greenland and Denmarkby reassigning the Arctic island’s command jurisdiction, Politico has reported.

Greenland would thus be moved from theEuropean Command(EUCOM) to theNorthern Command(NORTHCOM), whereas Denmark would remain in the former, according to the outlet.

The change, which is part of a broader review of theUnified Command Plan, would elevate Greenland’s priority in defense planning at the Pentagon and White House. “From the perspective of geography, the move makes some sense,” one official told Politico. “From a political perspective, however, this clearly is going to worry Europe.”

Greenland, an autonomous territory within Denmark, is geographically closer to North America than to Europe –just 26 kilometersfrom Canada, but over2,000from Denmark. (Canada: 26 kilometers = 16.16 miles, Denmark: 2000 kilometers = 1243 miles)

The US already maintains a major military outpost at Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, which was established in 1951 under a Cold War-era agreement. The base supports missile tracking and space surveillance, and now serves as a key node in Washington’s expanding missile defense ambitions.

Framing Greenland as a strategic asset, US officials have justified the shift asnecessary tocounter rival powers. “We need to ensure that America is leading in the Arctic,” Vice President J.D. Vance previously said, citing Russian and Chinese activity.

According to Politico, the reassignment would also supportexpansion of the Golden Dome— a global missile shield announced by President Donald Trump last month and estimated to cost hundreds of billions of dollars. The system would aim to intercept threats from anywhere on Earth or space. (Why are they using the word, “expansion”, when the Golden Dome is not even built yet?)

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called the initiative a “reckless approach” that undermines global stability.

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Arctic holds vast potential for trade and resource extraction. While stressing that “Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic,” he warned that geopolitical rivalry in the region is escalating, citing Washington’s “serious plans regarding Greenland.”

JUST IN: U.S. authorities have stopped a plot by two Chinese agents to smuggle a toxic fungus into a Michigan lab that could have wreaked havoc on the entirety of America’s food production capabilities.

T-2 mycotoxin is a trichothecene mycotoxin. It is a naturally occurring mold byproduct of Fusarium spp. fungus which is toxic to humans and other animals. The clinical condition it causes is alimentary toxic aleukia and a host of symptoms related to organs as diverse as the skin, airway, and stomach. Ingestion may come from consumption of moldy whole grains. T-2 can be absorbed through human skin.[2] Although no significant systemic effects are expected after dermal contact in normal agricultural or residential environments, local skin effects can not be excluded. Hence, skin contact with T-2 should be limited.

History

Alimentary toxic aleukia (ATA), a disease which is caused by trichothecenes like T-2 mycotoxin, killed many thousands of USSR citizens in the Orenburg District in the 1940s. It was reported that the mortality rate was 10% of the entire population in that area. During the 1970s it was proposed that the consumption of contaminated food was the cause of this mass poisoning. Because of World War II, harvesting of grains was delayed and food was scarce in Russia. This resulted in the consumption of grain that was contaminated with Fusarium molds, which produce T-2 mycotoxin.[3]

In 1981, the United States Secretary of State Alexander Haig and his successor George P. Shultz accused the Soviet Union of using T-2 mycotoxin as a chemical weapon known as "yellow rain" in Laos (1975–81), Kampuchea (1979–81), and Afghanistan (1979–81), where it allegedly caused thousands of casualties.[4] Although several US chemical weapons experts claim to have identified "yellow rain" samples from Laos as trichothecenes, other experts believe that this exposure was due to naturally occurring T-2 mycotoxin in contaminated foods.[5] Another alternative theory was developed by Harvard biologist Matthew Meselson, who proposed that the "yellow rain" found in Southeast Asia originated from the excrement of jungle bees.[6] The first indication for this theory came from finding high levels of pollen in the collected samples, giving the substance its yellow color. It was also found that jungle bees in this area fly collectively in great numbers, at altitudes too high to be easily seen, producing showers of feces that could have been mistaken for sprays from aircraft.[7] Further testing later determined that the oily liquid was, in fact, the pollen-filled feces of jungle bees.

Russian soldiers hijack Ukrainian armored vehicle (VIDEO)

Troops made off with a Canadian-made LAV Super Bison after surprising its driver, a new clip shows

Footage shared on social media has shown the moment Russian soldiers audaciously hijacked a Canadian-made Ukrainian armored vehicle.

Several Russian Telegram channels posted the undated drone video on Monday, reportedly from Ukraine’s Sumy Region which borders Russia. In the clip,Russian service members can be seen taking over an LAV Super Bison, before making off with it along a rural road.

After the vehicle disappears into the distance, the driver apparently realizes the futility of his chase and walks off in another direction.

According to the Voyennoye Delo Telegram channel, the operation was carried out by a reconnaissance unit of Russia’s 22nd Motorized Rifle Regiment.

Introduced in 2016, the LAV Super Bison is an 8x8 armored combat support vehicle built by General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada. It is designed for troop transport and battlefield support and offers its crew protection against mines and improvised explosive devices.The vehicle is typically equipped with a 25mm gun or a 7.62mm machine gun.

In late May, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow intended to create a “security buffer zone” along the border, after troops successfully routed a Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Region. In recent weeks, Russian officials have also reported strikes on Ukrainian troops in Sumy Region.

U-M Chinese Scholar Charged In Conspiracy To Smuggle Dangerous Biological Pathogen Through Detroit Metro Airport

Federal authorities in Detroit on Tuesday announced charges against a Chinese scholar at the University of Michigan and her boyfriend, a scientific researcher, for allegedly conspiring to smuggle a dangerous biological pathogen into the U.S.—a pathogen capable of damaging agricultural crops and causing illness in humans and livestock.

University of Michigan scholar Yunqing Jian, 33, and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, 34, both Chinese citizens, were charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the U.S., making false statements, and visa fraud, interim Detroit U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. announced.

According to the criminal complaint, Jian received Chinese government funding to work on the dangerous pathogen in China. A pathogen is a microorganism or biological agent that can cause disease or illness.

In this case, the pathogen is a fungus called Fusarium graminearum, which can cause “head blight,” a disease that affects wheat, barley, maize, and rice. It is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. The toxins produced by Fusarium graminearum can also cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.

The criminal complaint alleges that Jian’s boyfriend, Liu, works at a Chinese university where he conducts research on the same pathogen. Authorities allege that he initially lied but later admitted to smuggling Fusarium graminearum into the U.S. through Detroit Metropolitan Airport on July 27, 2024, with the intent of conducting research on it at the University of Michigan laboratory where Jian had been working since 2023.

An FBI affidavit filed Tuesday stated that Liu was interviewed at the airport by Customs and Border Patrol agents, andeventually admitted materials found in his backpack were different strains of the pathogen Fusarium graminearum. He also admitted that he intended to use the U-M lab to conduct research with the biological materials found in his backpack

"After LIU’s smuggling of the biological pathogen, FBI Agents interviewed Jian who falsely claimed that she knew nothing about Liu’s smuggling or his intent to conduct research on the pathogen at the laboratory during his visit," according to the FBI affidavit.

"In fact, an examination of electronic communications between Liu and Jian shows that the two discussed the shipping of biological materials and research being done in the laboratory prior to Lius’s arrival," the affidavit said. "Electronic evidence also shows that Jian has been involved in smuggling packages of biological material into the United States on prior occasions."

A brief bio of Jian on a University of Michigan website titled "Molecular Plant-Microbe Interaction Working Groups" states:

Yunqing Jian is from Sichuan, China. She received her Ph.D. at Zhejiang University in 2020 and completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship there. During her Ph.D. training, she studied the mechanisms by which fungi combat plant-derived stresses. She joined our lab in August 2022 as a postdoc, and her research mainly focuses on the evolutionary perspective of RLKs and their ligands.

“The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals—including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party—are of the gravest national security concerns," said U.S. Attorney Gorgon in a statement. "These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon said in a statement:

“Today’s criminal charges against Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu highlight CBP’s critical role in protecting the American people from biological threats that could devastate our agricultural economy and cause harm to humans—especially when it involves a researcher from a major university attempting to clandestinely bring potentially harmful biological materials into the United States.

Now you may ask yourself why some of the newbies on the council are under Federal Investigation. And the answer is simple. And it starts right here:

The story is simple. The City of Beaumont filed for financial relief after one of the storms that wiped out the Neches River Park. They got a butt load of money. And they used that money for what it was to be used for, which was the park.

Well, not so fast, Batman.

Thomas Flanagan is alleged to have been making behind-the-scenes deals with two city council members, including AJ Turner and former council member Taylor Nield. Part of the deal came from the city manager’s office. The offer was a million and change to knock down the 555 building to which Flanagan was trying to make some cash off of. And interestingly enough, the city did not have the money to buy out Flanagan, so they dipped into the money for the Riverfront. When they did that, they broke the law, according to our sources both inside and outside the Federland Government. Neild and Turner cut the deal as representatives. They hatched a plan to say that the building had to go as part of the Riverfront project. Which was a lie.

Now, that spread to payola questions on and by some on and close to the city council. So, investigators are working on who got the money. Some of which, being just over $30,000 which traded hands by Flanagan (allegedly) to some city council races. Dumbo Dunce Dylan Richardson was videoed in a meeting with Robin Mouton and that video has been turned over to the Federal Government. As well, we are told, undercover audio was taken of a conversation (not at the secret meeting videoed) between the parties.

Speaking of which, we had another tip today that City Council Hilliard made a fool of himself at City Hall, telling employees that there was new management coming. This upset some, and sure enough, it happened; Hilliard was reprimanded, and his hall pass was restricted.

We want you all to remember that Flanagan is said to have employed Richardson, who seemingly likes to inject himself into the political structure of Beaumont. If you will recall, Richardson seemingly has the local police department watching him as he was involved with some issue over at Kelly High School. Richardson also injected himself into (you guessed it) the Mike Getz fiasco, which got Hilliard into office.

Yes, strange bedfellows. And now Jerry Nathan’s name is being thrown around inside police circles as a person with “direct knowledge” and may be swept up into all of this.

The only one without dirt on her dress is LyDonna Sherwood. And don’t ask us why because she is a radical leftist, which may be her saving Grace. She believes she is the smartest person in the room. Which we giggle.

Federal Judge Orders Trump Administration to Continue Providing ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ for Transgender Inmates, Says There’s No “Reasoned” Analysis for Denying It

Another federal judge has legislated from the bench against the Trump Administration.

As Politico reported, U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth granted a preliminary injunction ordering the Trump Administration to continue providing gender-affirming care to hundreds of prison inmates who call themselves transgender. This decision follows a lawsuit filed by three transgender inmates after Trump issued an executive order on Day One barring federal funds from being spent on any medical procedure or treatment for transitioning inmates.

Lamberth, a Reagan appointee, justified his decision by saying there was no “reasoned” analysis to shut off their medical care.

Under Trump’s policies, biological sex, not gender identity, determined where inmates were placed, helping to prevent cases where violent offenders or opportunistic criminals claimed transgender status to gain access to female-only spaces. Specifically, the order states that “any medical procedure, treatment, or drug for the purpose of conforming an inmate’s appearance to that of the opposite sex.”

But Politico notes that prison officials interpreted Trump’s order to allow transgender inmates to continue to receive medication not related to that care. This included relieving anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

All told, roughly 600 transgender inmates continued to receive gender-affirming care, while about 400 were denied.

However, Lamberth ruled that there was zero evidence that the administration had made any serious analysis before implementing Trump’s order.

He demanded that the Bureau of Prisons resume hormone therapy and several other “social accommodations” available to transgender inmates before Trump’s executive order. These include gender-conforming undergarments and hair removal products.

“Neither the BOP nor the Executive Order provides any serious explanation as to why the treatment modalities covered by the Executive Order … should be handled differently than any other mental health intervention,” Lamberth wrote.

This decision by Lamberth follows two similarly outrageous rulings on his part related to transgender prisoners.

Back in February, Lamberth blocked the Trump administration from moving transgender women prisoners into men’s facilities or taking away their medical care. He outrageously claimed that the move likely violated the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

Lamberth in March ordered the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to transfer two transgender inmates (bio men) who identify as women back to federal women’s prisons.

His ruling back then also compelled the Bureau of Prisons to continue providing the two inmates with hormone therapy treatments for gender dysphoria.

Turns out it's a fungus, which when combined with ethyl-glycol as used in vaccines, messes with blood clotting and becomes very toxic. As it turns out, the vaccine also uses a fungus, as a binding agent. I don't have a direct connection, but it does seem very coincidental that the same ingredients are in the vaccine which causes blood clotting problems and kills people…,

But more importantly, it's commonly used as a BIOWEAPON…

World famous wildlife photographer Tom Mangelsen said he believes the National Park Service's "hard hazing" of Grizzly 1063 last month led to two of her cubs being killed and cannibalized by a large male grizzly. The National Park Service disputes that.

The “hard hazing” of a popular Grand Teton grizzly and her three yearling cubs led to two of the cubs being killed and cannibalized by a large male grizzly, a prominent wildlife photographer said.

In May, Grizzly 1063 and her cubs were being hazed away from residential areas at Colter Bay in Grand Teton National Park, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

Two of her yearling cubs were apparently killed and partially eaten by a male grizzly on May 13.

Wildlife photographer Tom Mangelsen, who has followed Teton’s grizzlies for years, said he thinks that the hazing caused 1063 and her cubs to become separated, giving a boar (male grizzly) a chance to kill the cubs.

He was on a wildlife viewing and photography trip to Africa when he got word that 1063’s cubs had been killed. He said he suspected what many had been saying – that the hazing of the bears was partly to blame.

“I knew about the hazing of Bonita, aka Grizzly 1063, before I left and got numerous reports that the Park continued hard hazing her and cubs often and still are,” he said.

Not Quite The New Grizzly 399

In years past, Mangelsen closely followed Wyoming’s beloved Grizzly 399, and his photographs of her and her cubs played a key role in making her the world’s most famous bear.

Mangelsen named her last cub, Spirit. His partner, Sue Cedarholm, gave the name Bonita to Grizzly 1063.

It remains uncertain whether Spirit survived after Grizzly 399 was struck and killed by a vehicle south of Jackson last fall. In 399’s absence, Bonita/Grizzly 1063 has gained prominence and popularity.

Though her fame isn’t quite what 399s was, she’s quickly gaining a loyal following and seems to be the bear that everybody is talking about this year, Wildlife photographer Deby Dixon of Gardiner, Montana told Cowboy State Daily.

It boils down to location, Dixon said. Like Grizzly 399 before her Bonita/1063 likes to hang out near roadways and other crowded areas. “She’s the most visible bear this year,” Dixon said.

That’s why so many were aghast when two of 1063’s cubs were killed, and the third went missing.The third cub later reunited with its mother, apparently uninjured, much to the delight of Grand Teton Grizzly watchers.

Cubs Were Bigger Than Usual Victims

Grizzly boars will occasionally kill cubs that aren’t theirs, in hopes of putting the mother grizzly back into heat and impregnating her. However, that usually happens with small cubs-of-the-year, rather than much larger, stronger and faster yearling cubs.

Mangelsen said that big grizzly boars are sometimes scapegoats for wildlife agency officials.

In the case of Grizzly 1063 and her cubs, he thinks a boar was scapegoated for driving the mother and cubs apart before killing two of them. But he’s skeptical whether that’s what actually happened.

“My educated guess from on the scene reports and information was that the family was separated by hazing before they found the dead yearlings,” he said. Mangelsen thinks that had the mother and cubs been together when the boar approached, he would not have dared pick a fight with them.

“A mother grizzly is often capable of fending off a male grizzly twice or bigger than her. I’ve witnessed it with grizzlies here, in Alaska and polar bears in the subarctic,” he said. “Males do not want to risk getting badly injured over trying to separate cubs from mom. Since the yearlings were pretty big, they too could protect themselves or even join in on the fight.

My opinion is they were separated by hazing and killed by a male one by one without the protection of their mom,” Mangelsen said.

NPS Says Hazing Didn’t Break Up FamilyMessages left for NPS officials weren’t returned on Monday. But the agency previously stated that there was no evidence to suggest that hazing separated Grizzly 1063 and her cubs before the cubs were killed. Grizzly 1063 and the cubs had been hazed away from “developed and residential areas at Colter Bay,” NPS reported.

“In accordance with park policy, staff hazed the bears when they lingered in these areas or remained immediately adjacent to nearby roadways,” NPS stated. The agency claimed the hazing didn’t lead to the mother and cubs becoming separated. But instead, an aggressive male bear might have separated them.

“Each time hazing was deemed appropriate and implemented, GB1063 and her cubs remained together,”NPS stated. According to the latest word from the network of Grand Teton grizzly watchers, 1063 was last spotted near Heron Pond, south of Colter Bay, Mangelsen said. Her surviving cub was apparently spotted north of the Colter Bay marina.

American billionaire Bill Gates has announced plans to spend the majority of his vast fortune over the next two decades to strengthen health and education systems across Africa, where some of his foundation’s past initiatives have drawn criticism.

The Microsoft founder made the commitment in an address at an event hosted at the African Union headquarters in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, on Monday, saying it is intended to help put every country on the continent on a “path to prosperity.”

“I recently made a commitment that my wealth will be given away over the next 20 years. The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa,” he said, noting that his wealth has reached a “very high level.”

The Gates Foundation said last month it will invest over $200 billion by 2045, the year it plans to conclude its operations. The funding will focus on expanding access to vaccines, improving maternal and child health, enhancing education – particularly for girls – and building digital infrastructure to support public health systems.

Virginians are set to vote for the late Rep. Gerry Connolly’s successor in a special election on Sept. 9.

Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Tuesday called for a special election to fill the northern Virginia seat left vacant after the longtime lawmaker’s passing on May 21.

Virginia’s 11th district is deep blue and will almost assuredly elect another Democrat.

The special election will be the third this fall to fill vacancies left by the passing of Democratic lawmakers. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, set a Nov. 4 special election to replace Rep. Sylvester Turner in April, following consternation among statewide Democrats, who threatened to sue the governor over the monthlong delay in setting the date.

Arizona voters will also wait to find a successor for Rep. Raúl Grijalva, with Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, setting a Sept. 23 special election date after Grijalva’s March 13 passing. Arizona state law generally requires a longer timeline for a special election than many other states.

Connolly, who had battled with esophageal cancer, had announced on April 28 that he would not seek reelection to represent the heavily Democratic D.C. suburb in 2026. In early May, the Virginian endorsed his former aide, James Walkinshaw, for the job.But the field is already getting crowded, with five other Democrats and two Republicans also tossing their hats in the ring.

Industry groups on Monday reported significantly lower May sales for new Tesla vehicles in Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Sweden.

Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian EV Association (NEVA), which represents electric car owners in the country, said the Tesla Model Y appeared to be popular nationwide, noting that the automaker’s recent price campaigns.“The Tesla Model Y has sold well and is popular in Norway, likely because it is good value for money and because it meets Norwegians’ needs for large luggage space, high ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and a tow hitch,” Bu told CNBC via email.

In a recent NEVA survey of more than 15,000 EV drivers, however,Bu said that the majority of respondents said that politics does influence their choice of car brand.“As many as 43 percent stated that they would not buy a Tesla for political reasons. We can therefore only speculate how much Tesla would have sold without Musk’s support for the MAGA movement and the Trump administration,” Bu said. (This is so fucking stupid!)

Last week, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, or ACEA, reported a 49% drop in overall European sales of Tesla vehicles in April, citing rising competition and brand damage. Tesla’s brand value has been declining since 2024 in part because of Musk’s rhetoric and political activity.

The Tesla CEO spent nearly $300 million to help re-elect U.S. President Donald Trump, and has since led an initiative for the Trump administration to slash federal agencies. Protests erupted at Tesla dealerships across Europe in response.

Why is Norway an EV leader?

Rico Luman, senior sector economist for transport and logistics at Dutch bank ING, described Tesla’s latest monthly car sales data in Norway as “quite remarkable,” noting that last month’s figures in the Netherlands also showed a month-on-month bounce back.

“In Norway EV-incentives are still abundantly available, making it almost a no-brainer to buy a BEV if possible. This is a general benefit, but this has also contributed to this surge,” Luman told CNBC by email. Norway has long been recognized as a global leader in sustainable transportation, and it is currently on track to become the first country in the world to effectively erase gasoline and diesel cars from its new car market.

Lawmakers and analysts have attributed the country’s shift away from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to long-term and consistent policies designed to support the uptake of EVs.Some of Norway’s EV incentives include a VAT exemption, discounts on road and parking taxes and access to bus lanes. The government has also heavily invested in public charging infrastructure, andmany Norwegian households are able to charge their cars at home.ING’s Luman attributed Tesla’s rebound in new car sales in Norway to the firm’s revamped model Y SUV, suggesting that a first batch of deliveries appears to have taken place in May, with more coming in June.

“This also shows that customers pushed back new Tesla orders to await the new edition, explaining part of the setback in the first months of the year,” he added.

2 accused of smuggling ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into US

Two Chinese nationals are facing charges in Michigan for allegedly smuggling a potentially dangerous fungus into the United States.

U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. said 33-year-old Yunqing Jian and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Zunyong Liu, are charged with conspiracy, false statements, smuggling and visa fraud.

Gorgon said the FBI arrested Jian for allegedly smuggling a fungus called Fusarium graminearum into the country. It’s classified as a potential agroterrorism weapon.

Officials said the fungus causes “head blight”, a disease in wheat, barley, maize and rice. The toxins can also cause vomiting, liver damage and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.

According to the federal complaint, Jian received government funding for her work on the pathogen in China.

The complaint also alleges that Jian’s electronics contain information describing her membership in the Chinese Communist Party.

Officials said Liu works at a Chinese university where he conducts research on head blight. He first lied, but later admitted to smuggling the fungus into the U.S. through the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, according to the federal filing.

Officials said Liu brought the fungus into the country so he could conduct research on it at a University of Michigan laboratory where his girlfriend, Jian, worked.

“The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals, including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party, are of the gravest national security concerns. These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into in the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme,” Gorgon stated.

Mechanism of action

The toxicity of T-2 toxin is due to its 12,13-epoxy ring.[14] Epoxides are in general toxic compounds; these react with nucleophiles and then undergo further enzymatic reactions. The reactivity of epoxides can lead to reactions with endogenous compounds and cellular constituents like DNA bases and proteins.[15] These reactions could be the reason for the noticed actions and effects of T-2 mycotoxin. The toxic compound influences the metabolism of membrane phospholipids, leads to an increase of liver lipid peroxidases and has an inhibiting effect on DNA and RNA synthesis. In addition it can bind to an integral part of the 60s ribosomal subunit, peptidyltransferase, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. These effects are thought to be the explanation for T-2 toxin inducing apoptosis (cell death) in different tissues as the immune system, the gastrointestinal tissue and also fetal tissue. With regard to apoptosis there has been noticed that the level of the pro-apoptotic factor Bas (Bcl-2-associated X protein) was increased and the level of Bcl-xl, an anti-apoptotic factor, was decreased in human chrondocytes (cartilage cells). When exposed to T-2 mycotoxin. Furthermore, the level of Fas, an apoptosis-related cell-surface antigen and p53, a protein regulating the cell cycle, were increased.

Synthesis

T-2 mycotoxin is produced naturally by Fusarium fungi of which the most important species are: F. sporotrichioides, F. langsethiae, F. acuminatum and F. poae. These fungi are found in grains such as barley, wheat and oats. The production of this compound for research and commercial purposes is generally accomplished by cultivating some strain of T-2 mycotoxin producing fungi on agar plates. On these agar plates the fungi appear powdery and can yield substantial amounts of T-2 mycotoxin. For the isolation of the compound high pressure liquid chromatography is commonly used (HPLC).[16]

In the Fusarium species, biosynthesis of the T-2 mycotoxin often starts with trichodiene, and many of the species share a common route of oxidizations and cyclizations. As an example, from the F. sporotrichioides species, the important oxidation steps that occur start from trichodiene and goes to isotrichodiol. From there, the eleventh carbon atom is oxidized to form isotrichotriol. The ninth carbon is then oxidized, and trichotriol is formed, which then cyclizes to make isotrichodermol. After that, the fifteenth carbon is oxidized to form didecalonectrin, which leads to the fourth carbon being oxidized, and diacetoxyscirpenol is formed. The second to last step is the oxidation of the eighth carbon to make neosolaniol, which then undergoes slight modification to create the T-2 toxin.[17]

Absorption and exposure

Humans and animals are generally exposed to T-2 mycotoxins through food. Certain grains can contain the toxin which makes it a threat to human health and an economic burden.[18] Unlike most biological toxins T-2 mycotoxin can be absorbed through intact skin. The compound can be delivered via food, water, droplets, aerosols and smoke from various dispersal systems. This makes it a potential biological weapon, however large amounts of the compound are required for a lethal dose. T-2 mycotoxin has an LD50 of approximately 1 milligram per kilogram of body weight.

The EFSA estimates that the mean exposure of T-2 in the EU lies between 12 and 43 ng/kg bw/day.[19] This range is below the TDI of 100 ng/ kg body weight for the sum of HT-2 and T-2 toxins which is used by the EFSA.

Distribution

T-2 mycotoxin is distributed uniformly throughout the body without preference to a specific organ or site. In rodents, plasma concentration levels peak around roughly thirty minutes after exposure, and in one study, the half-life of the T-2 toxin was seen to be less than twenty minutes. In a different study involving pigs, the distribution after four hours of IV injection was seen to be 15–24% in the GI tract and 4.7–5.2% in various other tissues.[20]
