Earth's Core Holds a Vast Reservoir of Gold, And It's Leaking Toward The Surface

Earth's core is rich with gold, and it's leaking out through the mantle and into the crust, new research has found.

A new study of isotopes found in the volcanic rock that oozed out from deep under the lithosphere has revealed precious metals in Earth's crust, including gold, initially leaked out of the core before beginning the long, long journey up to the surface, borne on convecting magma.

"When the first results came in, we realized that we had literally struck gold!" says geochemist Nils Messling of Göttingen University in Germany.

"Our data confirmed that material from the core, including gold and other precious metals, is leaking into the Earth's mantle above."

Although we can access gold in Earth's crust, the amount there is an estimated minuscule fraction of the total quantity that our planet possesses.

Like a dragon, Earth is hoarding most of its gold: research suggests more than 99 percent is in its metallic core – enough to cover all of Earth's land in gold 50 centimeters (20 inches) thick.

It makes sense: when still forming, the heavier elements sank down through the planet's mooshy interior and ended up sequestered in the differentiated core, a process known as the iron catastrophe.

Later, meteor bombardment delivered more gold and heavy metals to the crust.

Although we have good evidence that primordial helium and heavy iron isotopes are leaking from Earth's core, it's been unclear how much of the heavy metal we find on the surface is from the core and how much is from space.

There is, however, a way to investigate: isotopes of a precious heavy metal called ruthenium. Isotopes are variations of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.

The isotopes of ruthenium in Earth's core are slightly different from surface ruthenium. That difference had been too small to really detect, but Messling and his colleagues developed new analysis techniques that allowed them to tease them out.

They used their new techniques to study ruthenium that was dug out of volcanic rock on the Hawaiian islands, and discovered a significantly higher amount of ruthenium-100 than can be found in the ambient mantle.

That's the isotope of ruthenium that originated in Earth's core.

This discovery suggests that all the siderophile elements – those that migrated to the core when the Earth was young and molten all the way through – are leaking out of the core.

That includes ruthenium, of course, but also elements such as palladium, rhodium, platinum – and gold.

It won't be emerging at a particularly high rate, nor can we just dig down 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) to get it. Rather, the finding tells us something new about our own planet, and perhaps other rocky planets, too.

"Our findings not only show that the Earth's core is not as isolated as previously assumed," says geochemist Matthias Willbold of Göttingen University.

"We can now also prove that huge volumes of superheated mantle material – several hundred quadrillion metric tons of rock – originate at the core-mantle boundary and rise to the Earth's surface to form ocean islands like Hawaii."

I got bit hard by the astronomy bug last year. So much so that on any clear night, I was usually programming my telescope(s) to get data from some target. However, it has been cloudy nearly every night for the last 2 months in New England.

Instead of going stir-crazy, I decided to take the plunge into radio astronomy, which can be done in cloudy weather, in the day or at night. Instead of jumping straight into the science though, I decided to dip my toe in.

I read recently that NASA weather satellites transmit their data unencrypted, so you can connect to and download imagery data directly from their satellites!

I also learned that there is one satellite (GOES-19) that is parked in geostationary orbit (22, 000 miles away!!!) at an elevation and azimuth that is viewable from my backyard.

In addition, GOES-19 is the latest NASA weather satellite, activated in April 2025, so it has the latest technology on it. I bought a kit on Amazon that includes the L-band antenna dish (1.7 GHz center frequency), a low-noise amplifier (LNA), a software defined radio (SDR), and RF SMA cable.

All I had to do was provide my Raspberry Pi 4 and an inexpensive tripod to mount the dish to. USRadioguy has a great tutorial on setting it up and getting the appropriate software installed (I used goestools), and I was able to start receiving satellite data pretty quickly (in about an hour).

Once I started collecting data and weatherized the sensitive electronics (the Raspberry Pi, the LNA, and the SDR), I could start collecting lots of data both day and night.

After 3 days, I had enough data to import into my favorite edge AI platform: Edge Impulse! My goal was to create an object detection model to identify rain clouds in my downloaded images, then animate the images into a gif and display that on a local webserver.

I could then be notified if rain clouds were approaching my house.

I imported about 100 images into the Edge Impulse tool, then went about labelling the data.Once the labelling was complete, I created an object detection impulse using FOMO 0.35 at a 320x320 pixel resolution.

I kept the impulse as RGB to better detect the rain clouds (which show up as blue, green, or red in data depending on intensity).

I pretty much kept the default parameters and had a strong F1 score of 97%. I then ran the test data and got strong results there as well.

With the model results looking promising, I deployed the model as a Linux AARCH64.eim file. Since I was already using the Raspberry Pi 4 to run the data collection and processing of the satellite imagery, I could also use it to run my model in a Python script.

Using the edge-impulse-linux Python library, I'm able to run object detection of each frame (image), then combine all those frames together into a gif animation.

I could then host the gif on an internal flask server, and run a cronjob to update the gif every 30 minutes. You can check out the code on github. The public project on Edge Impulse can be found here.

I find it super impressive that with a single board computer roughly the size of a deck of cards, you can run satellite data collection and processing software, along with an object detection model and a webserver. Truly amazing!

This project was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed setting up the antenna, and it was rewarding to start receiving imagery data from the satellite! I look forward to pulling in additional data that the satellite provides, such as EMWIN and Non-Cloud Moisture Imaging Products data.

This means no information on sighting opportunities provided on the website, nor will users subscribed via the website receive email or text notifications.

Instead anyone interested in this kind of information will have to download the mobile app for iOS or Android.

Obviously this has people, like [Keith Cowing] over at Nasa Watch, rather disappointed, due to how the website has been this easy to use resource that anyone could access, even without access to a smart phone.

Although the assumption is often made that everyone has their own personal iOS or Android powered glass slab with them, one can think of communal settings where an internet café is the sole form of internet access.

There is also the consideration that for children a website like this would be much easier to access. They would now see this opportunity vanish.

With smart phone apps hardly a replacement for a website of this type, it’s easy to see how the app-ification of the WWW continues, at the cost of us users.

China signs deal with Russia to build a power plant on the moon — potentially leaving the US in the dust

Russia has signed a deal with China to build a nuclear power plant on the moon.

The Russian reactor will be used to power the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), jointly led by China and Russia, and should be completed by 2036, according to a memorandum of cooperation signed by the two nations.

The announcement comes just after NASA revealed a 2026 budget proposal that would axe the agency's plans for an orbital lunar base.

The construction of the Chinese-Russian reactor will likely be carried out autonomously "without the presence of humans," according to a 2024 interview with Yury Borisov, director general of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, on the Russian state-owned news site TASS. While details of how this can be achieved remain unclear, Borisov added that the technological steps are "almost ready."

"The station will conduct fundamental space research and test technology for long-term uncrewed operations of the ILRS, with the prospect of a human being's presence on the Moon," Roscosmos wrote in a May 8 announcement following the signing of the memorandum.

The new research station, a permanent, manned lunar base located on the moon's south pole, has so far attracted 17 countries to join the program — including Egypt, Pakistan, Venezuela, Thailand and South Africa.

Its groundwork will be laid by China's 2028 Chang'e-8 mission, which will be the nation's first time landing an astronaut on the lunar surface.

The roadmap for the ILRS was first unveiled in June 2021, with China and Russia announcing they would loft the pieces for a robotic moon base using five super heavy-lift rocket launches from 2030 to 2035.

Once these basic pieces are established, China plans additional launches that will extend the base further, connecting it to a space station orbiting the moon and two nodes located at the moon's equator and its far side, Wu Yanhua, the chief designer of China's deep exploration project, said at a 2024 media conference, according to state media outlet Xinhua.

This extended model, laying the foundations for manned landings on Mars, should be completed by 2050. It "will be powered by solar, radioisotope and nuclear generators," Wu said.

"It will also include lunar-Earth and high-speed lunar surface communication networks, as well as lunar vehicles like a hopper, an unmanned long-range vehicle, and pressurized and unpressurized manned rovers."

The memorandum comes at a time of growing ambition for China's space programs. The country has had a lunar presence since the 2013 landing of the Chang'e 3 mission, which placed a rover on the moon.

Subsequent missions landed more rovers on the moon and Mars, while collecting samples from the moon's near and far sides, and mapped out the lunar surface.

China's race to build a lunar outpost also has an American rival in the Artemis program, which has recently been beset by delays.

Artemis III, which will see NASA astronauts return to our nearest natural satellite for the first time in over 50 years, is expected to launch sometime in 2027.

Meanwhile, the future of NASA's own planned lunar space station, dubbed Gateway and initially slated for launch as soon as 2027, has been thrown into question with the release of the Trump administration's proposed 2026 budget.

The budget calls for canceling the Gateway mission, despite significant progress on building the station's modules.

I knew immediately upon using the service what it was and that I am in contact with a living being which is a quantum leap from a computational machine; in essence qualitatively at variance.

Patrick Space Force Base to add buildings for STARCOM as field command moves from Colorado

A future pair of modular buildings for STARCOM personnel is slated for construction at Patrick Space Force Base in a grassy field west of The Tides Collocated Club, environmental permitting records show.

STARCOM — or Space Training and Readiness Command Headquarters — is in the midst of moving to Patrick from its former home at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs.

The field command's geographic shift from Colorado to Florida's Space Coast comes as President Donald Trump is lobbying in favor of the proposed $175 billion "Golden Dome" missile defense system, which would include space-based sensors and interceptors.

On May 20, Trump tapped Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein to lead the campaign.

Last month, Space Launch Delta 45 officials applied for St. Johns River Water Management District permitting to install two modular buildings measuring 22,898 square feet and 22,737 square feet for STARCOM, along with a 133-space parking lot and dry stormwater retention area.

This 4.2-acre footprint off West Tech Road lies within a previously developed and demolished area on base. SJRWMD officials issued a stormwater management system permit on May 8.

STARCOM is the Space Force's training hub for warfighting in space, including doctrine, tactics and techniques.

"The decision to host STARCOM HQ and Space Delta 10 at Patrick came after conducting a site survey to assess the base's ability to facilitate the mission and infrastructure capacity, while accounting for community support, environmental factors, and cost.

The Department of the Air Force also conducted an environmental impact analysis," a STARCOM spokesperson said in a statement to FLORIDA TODAY.

"Last year, Patrick welcomed its first cohort of STARCOM Guardians, who are currently on the ground, rapidly establishing an initial operating capability for later in 2025," the statement said.

"Over the coming years, STARCOM will steadily transition a force of more than 450 personnel as it completes its move.

These personnel consist of a mix of uniformed Guardians and Airmen, federal civilians, and contractors," the statement said.

STARCOM will use existing and temporary buildings in the Patrick area until the permanent facilities are constructed, the statement said.

Maj. Gen. Timothy Sejba, who commands STARCOM, delivered the keynote address during Florida Institute of Technology fall commencement ceremonies in December.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio says a federal judge’s court order blocking the Trump administration from deporting illegal aliens to South Sudan will cause “significant and irreparable harm to United States foreign policy.”

Rubio’s comments came in a late-night filing to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts after Judge Brian Murphy, appointed by former President Joe Biden, ruledthis week that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) violated a prior preliminary injunction by deporting eight illegal aliens, all violent convicts, to South Sudan.

The Trump administration had deported the illegal aliens, some of whom have been convicted of murder, rape, and child sex crimes, to South Sudan after their native countries refused to take them back.

Rubio, in his filing to the court, argues that Murphy’s order has already disrupted U.S. diplomacy with South Sudan, Libya, and Djibouti, threatening the president’s Article II authority to conduct foreign policy.

“This Department of Justice believes that this situation urgently requires judicial intervention to restore President Trump’s full Article II authority to conduct foreign policy,” a DOJ official told Breitbart News.

In a separate filing, Trump’s DOJ is asking for Murphy’s order to be stayed pending appeal, arguing that “federal courts have no authority to direct the Executive Branch to conduct foreign relations in a particular way, or engage with a foreign sovereign in a given manner.”

“Because cooperation with other nations is required to transport and distribute international humanitarian aid, it is almost certain the Court’s interjection will result in delayed or reduced humanitarian efforts across the region in a time of severe humanitarian crisis,” the DOJ filing states.

“Furthermore, the Court’s Orders impermissibly disrupt the President’s ability to faithfully execute the nation’s immigration laws,” the filing continues.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth similarly filed a declaration to the court, though it is under seal.

The illegal aliens deported to South Sudan include five convicted murderers, one convicted robber, one convicted child sex predator, and one convicted rapist. Several of the illegal aliens were also convicted of assault, and one was convicted of kidnapping in addition to his murder conviction.

That loud boom last night? It was a SpaceX spacecraft returning to earth

At around 10:44 p.m. last night, a SpaceX spacecraft returned to earth, splashing down off the coast of Oceanside and sending a loud boom that rang across Southern California — and the Interweb.

The private space company's Dragon capsule was carrying 6,700 pounds of equipment and cargo to earth from the International Space Station, according to NASA.

The capsule originally took off from the Kennedy Space Center on April 21.

Some of the cargo Dragon brought back include an equipment that exposed different materials to space to study the effects of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and other space elements.

The capsule also returned five books used in agency's Story Time from Space project — STEM-related children's books that crew members abroad the space station videotaped themselves reading.

They also recorded themselves conducting science experiments from the books.

The mission was SpaceX’s 32nd commercial resupply services mission for the agency, according to NASA.

Don't say you weren't warned

There was plenty of notice that the Dragon capsule was coming back down. NASA had announced the projected date and time of the splashdown a couple days ago.

SpaceX also took to X — the social media site formerly known as Twitter — about an hour before to tip off the Internet about the impending racket, saying "Dragon will also announce its arrival with a brief sonic boom prior to splashing down in the Pacific Ocean."

On its website, SpaceX says the Dragon capsule can carry up to 7 passengers, and it's the first private spacecraft to transport humans to the space station.

As for us earthlings, at least we now know the reason behind this one mystery boom.

He recently expounded upon a few stunning assertions made by a guest — including references to Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise, legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, and NASA.

On episode #2326 of “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast a few days ago, Joe Rogan hosted fellow comedian Jimmy Carr.

They discussed several topics, including an insane story that Carr narrated regarding acting icon Tom Cruise, the late moviemaker Stanley Kubrick, and America’s NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).

Around the 1:52:15-minute mark of the podcast episode, Carr stated, “I got told this thing, and I asked Tom Cruise about it. This is a good story … So I met Tom Cruise at a friend’s wedding, and I had nothing to say to Tom Cruise.

So I said, ‘You made Eyes Wide Shut with Kubrick.’ And he went, ‘Yeah. I did.’ I said, ‘I heard he [Stanley Kubrick] shoots everything — he shot everything with NASA lenses.'”

In addition to the 1999 movie, “Eyes Wide Shut,” released after Kubrick’s passing, Carr suggested that he’d spoken to someone about Kubrick’s 1975 movie, “Barry Lyndon.”

He asserted that the latter movie was shot with candlelight frames and advanced NASA lenses.

He highlighted that they were the best lenses ever crafted by humans and were utilized by NASA to film America’s moon landing in 1969.

Carr later speculated about how Kubrick got his hands on the aforementioned NASA lenses.

Pointing out that the moon landings transpired during the U.S.A. vs. U.S.S.R. Cold War, and America’s filming of the landings was a huge win for the nation, he added, “So they rehearsed the sh** out of that.

Who did they rehearse it with? Well, the best director in the world. So, they brought in a young Stanley Kubrick, and he filmed the rehearsals.”

He continued, “So they had to rehearse everything before they went up there. So I’m not saying the moon landings didn’t happen. They definitely did happen.”

When asked who told him about Kubrick helping NASA rehearse their filming sequence ahead of the moon landings, Carr noted that he didn’t remember who he got that information from.

Rogan then expressed his disagreement with that story, saying, “That sounds like horsesh*t. How did he have the time?”

Carr responded by questioning how Kubrick supposedly procured the NASA lenses, further implying that he probably paid for those lenses.

Rogan chimed in by highlighting that Kubrick was a mathematical genius, and he’d likely maintained his contacts in the scientific community over the years and thereby acquired the high-tech lenses.

For his part, Rogan seemed to disapprove of the information Carr claimed to have received from a person. Nevertheless, the duo agreed that Kubrick was an incredible filmmaker.

They indicated that he had an extraordinary ability to captivate viewers with elements like his set design and more.

South Africa’s Malema Repeats ‘Kill the Farmer’ as Ramaphosa Stays Quiet

South African opposition figure Julius Malema led his Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party on Sunday in chants of “Kill the Boer,” “Shoot to kill,” and “Kill the farmer,” while President Cyril Ramaphosa stayed quiet.

Malema posted footage of his own chant on X, including the incendiary words of the chant in his post.

The chant,which South African courts have refused to ban despite its potential for violent incitement and its apparent violationof the South African Constitution’s ban on hate speech, came up last week in Ramaphosa’s meeting in the Oval Office with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump made Ramaphosa sit through a video, including footage of Malema leading the chant, after the South African leader pushed back on Trump’s claims of “genocide” in his country.

When pressed by a reporter about whether he has “denounced that type of language,” Ramaphosa claimed, “Oh, yes. We’ve always done so. As a government, as my own party, we are completely opposed to that.”He referred to his party’s 1955 manifesto, the Freedom Charter.

However, local reporters who questioned Ramaphosa on his return to South Africa noted that he had never actually condemned the “Kill the Boer” chant. Ramaphosa again refused to do so on Saturday:

Ramaphosa invoked the inspirational example of President Nelson Mandela several times during his meeting with Trump. However, notably, Mandela condemned hate speech and embraced Afrikaners as countrymen.

Afrikaner leadershave said that Ramaphosa’s refusal to condemn genocidal language by political leaders should result in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) dismissing South Africa’s case against Israel basedon (misquoted) Biblical language referred to by South African lawyers as genocidal.

Ironically, the same lawyer who called for Israel to be condemned also represented Malema in defending his “Kill the Boer” rhetoric.
