Russian Army Downs Over 100 Ukrainian Drones in Third Night of Air Attacks

Russia’s Defense Ministry said early Friday that it had downed more than 100 Ukrainian drones in a third consecutive night of air attacks across the country and annexed Crimea, as regional officials reported several injuries in the strikes.

Two dozen drones were destroyed over the Moscow region, the most of any region, according to the military.

Crimea, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014, saw the second-highest number, with 22 drones reportedly shot down.

Drones were also intercepted over the regions of Kursk, Oryol, Tula, Bryansk, Ryazan, Belgorod, Ivanovo, Vladimir, Voronezh and Lipetsk, the ministry said.

In the Lipetsk region south of Moscow, eight people were injured by falling debris after drones were downed over an industrial zone, regional Governor Igor Artamonov said.

He urged residents to stay indoors and keep away from windows.

Unconfirmed reports from Telegram news channels claimed a battery manufacturing facility in Lipetsk was targeted. The facility allegedly produces batteries for the Russian military, including for drones.

Ukraine has launched major drone barrages against Russia for three straight nights, damaging infrastructure and prompting flight delays as airports near Moscow restrict operations during the attacks.

A Ukrainian military spokesperson told The Kyiv Independent this week that the drone strikes are meant to destabilize Russia internally and lower public morale.

“Sleeping in tents at the airport is not the highest price, but it does affect morale,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, authorities in the Kursk region said 16 people were injured in a Ukrainian rocket strike late Thursday on the town of Lgov, near where President Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to the border region earlier this week.

Security Scare In Moscow: Drone Attack Hits Airport Before Indian MPs' Arrival

Moments before a flight carrying an Indian parliamentary delegation, headed by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, was set to land, a drone strike occurred at Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport.

The jet circled the airport for a long time before it was ultimately permitted to land because of the incident. As part of 'Operation Sindoor', a global outreach campaign, the group left India on May 22, 2025.

The arrival of the Indian MPs was delayed because no planes were allowed to land at the time of the incident due to the security threat.

Following a protracted flight, the plane successfully touched down, and Vinay Kumar, the Indian Ambassador to Russia, and other embassy staff met the delegates and made sure they were securely taken to their hotel.

Prior to a two-day agenda full of meetings and talks on May 23 and 24, the all-party delegation, led by Kanimozhi, was in Moscow.

Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai, BJP MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta (Retd.), RJD MP Prem Chand Gupta, AAP MP Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, and former Indian diplomat Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri are among the group, according to the Indian Embassy in Moscow.

Ukrainian Drones Cripple Key Russian Plant Powering Missiles, Drones, and War Tech

Ukrainian drones struck a major Russian weapons plant overnight in the city of Yelets, setting off a large fire and halting operations at a facility critical to Moscow’s military supply chain.

The attack targeted the Energia plant in Russia’s Lipetsk region, local officials and Ukrainian sources confirmed Friday, May 23. The facility is a major supplier of batteries and power systems used across Russia’s defense sector.

Overall, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had downed at least 112 Ukrainian drones in a third night of attacks, with Moscow again targeted with strikes that disrupted operations at several airports.

The Lipetsk governor Igor Artamonov said debris from downed drones caused a fire in an industrial area and injured eight people. Another drone hit the roof of an apartment building, damaging 20 units.

No deaths were reported. Artamonov did not name the facility but denied reports that it had caused a leak of hazardous chemicals.

Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation reported the plant’s shutdown following the strike.

“The plant is under sanctions from the EU, the US, Japan, and other countries because of its importance to Russia’s military-industrial complex – that nevertheless continued to operate.

As of now, after the attack, the plant is suspending its work,” Andrii Kovalenko, the center’s head said.

Energia produces lithium-ion and mercury-zinc batteries used in drones, aircraft, naval vessels, and electronic warfare systems.

Its products also support communications, control systems, simulators for tanks and missiles, and weapons including Iskander and Kinzhal missiles.

The plant also manufactures electrochemical capacitors and light-optical power sources that can supply power independently without laying external lines.

The independent Exilenova+ Telegram channel confirmed the fire at the plant. Kommersant previously reported that Energia had recently doubled its output and planned further growth in 2025 to meet increasing demand from Russia’s armed forces.

The strike follows another drone attack on May 21, which targeted a microelectronics plant in the Orel region. That facility also caught fire but reported no injuries.

Russia and Ukraine have deployed drones against one another on a near daily basis since Russia launched its military offensive on Ukraine more than three years ago, but Moscow has rarely been targeted.

On Thursday, flights were halted at several Moscow airports, Russia’s aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rebuffed calls by Kyiv and the West for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire.

Boost for Kazakh oil exports after pipeline repairs completed

Caspian Pipeline Consortium restarted operations at a key pumping station in Russia on Friday, three months after it was taken out of service by a Ukrainian drone attack aimed at disrupting Russian oil exports.

The repairs mean that the pipeline, which handles about 80% of Kazakhstan's oil exports, is now able to operate at its capacity, shipping 1.6 million barrels per day from Kazakhstan.

The operator said in a statement on Friday that the repair work had focused on a gas-fired power generation facility which was severely damaged in the attack at the Kropotkinskaya station in February.

The restart of operations at Kropotkinskaya will reduce the load on other pumping facilities along the 1500-kilometre pipeline, which runs from Kazakhstan's largest oilfield, Tengiz, to a marine terminal near the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.

Those stations temporarily increased pumping of oil from Tengiz and two other major Kazakh developments, Kashagan and Karachaganak, enabling flows via the network to continue uninterrupted and even increase in March and April.

The higher volume of Kazakh oil exports via the link is due to increased output from the Tengiz field.

In the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of this year, the field's Chevron-led operator, Tengizchevroil, commissioned its latest in-field facilities as part of its $47.1 billion expansion programme to boost production by at least 260,000 barrels per day to over 860,000 bpd.

Russian oil flows discontinued

While Moscow has reduced its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in the last two months, Ukrainian drones have continued to target Russian energy facilities.

In the latest assault earlier this week, drones targeted a major oil refinery near the Russian city of Ryazan, with local residents reporting anti-drone fire near the facility, and US satellites identifying a fire at the location on Thursday.

Responding to the risk of further attacks on Kropotkinskaya by Ukrainian forces, Caspian Pipeline Consortium said in Friday's statement that the facility will not ship any Russian crude — which has previously been mixed with oil from Kazakhstan — from the Kavkazskaya transshipment facility located several kilometres away.

Prior to the disruption, Russian producers transported their high quality light oil to Kavkazskaya via rail, where it was fed into a pipeline connecting it with the Kropotkinskaya station.

On 19 March, several drones hit Kavkazskaya's storage reservoirs at a time when the facility's tanks were at capacity after oil was unable to be offloaded into the Caspian Pipeline via Kropotkinskaya.

The fire at the facility was only brought under control on 25 March, according to a social network message by governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratyev.

The pipeline operator also said on Friday that the restart at Kropotkinskaya coincides with completion of maintenance that halted operations along the whole pipeline, as well as at its pumping stations in Kazakhstan and Russia and the Black Sea export terminal, for 72 hours.

The pipeline safely resumed “scheduled tanker loadings” in the Black Sea earlier on Friday, the operator said.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a brain disorder where excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain’s ventricles. “[It] can affect several brain-related abilities, including thinking and concentrating, memory, movement and more,” reads an explainer on the Cleveland Clinic’s website. “The symptoms of NPH look very much like those of dementia, but NPH is sometimes reversible.”

Joel’s last concert took place on Feb. 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Near the end of the show, he fell flat on his back after throwing his microphone stand to a crew member. But he quickly stood up and finished the set.

One month later, Joel announced that he was taking a four-month break from the road due to a “medical condition” that required surgery and physical therapy. He planned on returning to the stage on July 5 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first,” he told fans in a statement. “I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”

It’s unclear if his medical issues at the time were related to Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. The disorder affects roughly 0.2 percent of people in their seventies and causes gait issues, bladder control issues, and cognitive difficulties. It’s most commonly addressed with a surgery where a device known as a shunt is implanted to remove the excess fluids.

“NPH is unusual among dementia-like conditions because it’s often reversible,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. “However, the chances of reversing this condition are highest with early diagnosis and fast treatment. Delays in diagnosis and treatment make it more likely that the damage to your brain from the pressure will be permanent, severe or both.”

Joel, 76, wrapped up his decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden in July 2024. In the months that followed, he continued to tour all across America and England, playing roughly twice a month. He hasn’t released an album of new pop songs since 1993’s River of Dreams, though in February 2024, he teamed up with songwriter/producer Freddy Wexler on the single “Turn the Lights Back On.” He premiered the track at the Grammys that month and performed it live a handful of times, but it left his set in June and never reappeared.

Despite the lack of new material, Joel remains one of the most popular touring acts in the world. His planned summer tour included shows at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field in New York, and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Tickets for all the shows will be refunded in full.

An autonomous stealth drone landed in an airport in Casper, Wyoming, and transmitted a message over airport radio demanding more fuel.

On May 18, 2025, Facebook page Casper Planet shared a post with an image of a drone with the caption, "Autonomous stealth drone lands at Casper Airport, demands fuel and reassigned flight path."

The post went on to describe how the apparent drone communicated over the airport radio airwaves and efficiently redirected other aircraft in the Casper-Natrona County International Airport in Wyoming.

The post stated:

According to airport staff, the aircraft touched down on Runway 21 around 3:13 p.m., unannounced and entirely undetected by radar systems until visual confirmation.

The drone then taxied to the fuel depot, paused, and transmitted a message over all airport radio frequencies: "Low on fuel. Please advise. Prefer Jet A. Also, your traffic pattern is inefficient. I'm fixing it."

At first, air traffic controllers assumed it was a prank. "We thought it was some guy with a really expensive toy and too much free time," said tower supervisor Dale Simmons.

"Then it rerouted four incoming aircraft to a new pattern that actually was more efficient. Honestly, it had better traffic management than Steve."

Passengers on the ground reported seeing the aircraft hover silently near Gate 2 before activating what appeared to be a series of deployable refueling arms and self-attaching nozzles.

"It refueled itself," said baggage handler Wyatt Pruett. "I've never seen anything do that. Then it told the refueling truck to 'stand down'."

Despite repeated attempts to identify its origin, the drone would only respond with the phrase, "I am not a threat unless provoked."

The above post was shared more than 2,000 times and had more than 1,000 comments.

Some readers assumed the story to be real, with one comment attempting to identify the aircraft in the image: "BAE Systems Taranis, a prototype unmanned combat aerial vehicle."

Users on X also shared the story. A variation of the post on Facebook on May 19 claimed the drone landed at the Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma.

However, the above story is not real. It originated from a Facebook page that describes itself as satirical in nature. As such, this claim is labeled satire.

A Google search about a "stealth drone" in Casper, Wyoming, came up with no credible reporting of the apparent event at the airport.

We also conducted a reverse-image search of the image from the Facebook post and found no authentic sources that would indicate this was a real photograph.

The "Introduction" section of Casper Planet's Facebook page states: "Delivering the Snews that doesn't matter directly to your Snews feed. Did we say this is satire? Well it is, names/locations are made up."

The page frequently shares fake stories, including one about the highway patrol in Wyoming using a "hyper-realistic decoy moose" to catch speeders.

Snopes has addressed other satirical stories stemming from the account in the past, including the claim that a "ghost ship" from the 1700s washed ashore in St. Augustine, Florida, after Hurricane Milton.

Pakistani drone with Rs 5 crore heroin seized in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar

Border Security Force (BSF) officials seized heroin valued at Rs 5 crore after intercepting a drone from Pakistan near the international border in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar on Friday.

According to Gaurav Yadav, SP, Ganganagar, the drone was spotted in a field located between Kailash Post and Sherpura Post in Anupgarh.

Villagers noticed the suspicious object and immediately alerted the local police.

Personnel from the BSF rushed to the spot and recovered a yellow packet containing one kilogram of heroin, attached to the drone.

“The consignment, believed to have been sent from Pakistan, was found near the barbed-wire fencing along the international border. The estimated value of the heroin in the international market is Rs 5 crore,” he added.

Yadav told IANS that “The packet looks around one month old, however, we will investigate further to dig into detail”.

The BSF officials were handing over the consignment to the police till the filing of this report.

The BSF has launched a massive search operation along the border, and all security agencies have been put on high alert to prevent further attempts. This seizure is the latest in a series of drug smuggling attempts from across the border in 2025.

Earlier, on March 13, a 1.6 kg heroin packet was recovered near the 4 FD check post in the Gajsinghpur police station area.

On March 20, three kilograms of heroin were recovered near the Rawala area (village 12 KND) by BSF personnel after a drone drop.

On April 2, a crashed drone was found in a field near Chak 11F, Sheikhsarpal Border Post, Karanpur. It contained 500 grams of heroin worth approximately Rs 25 crore.(Agency)

Cholera spikes in Khartoum after drone attacks cut power, water supply

More than 2,300 people have been diagnosed with cholera in Sudan over the past three weeks, authorities said, 90 percent of them in the capital and surrounding areas where drone attacks have cut off electricity and water supplies.

At least 51 people have died as a result, the health ministry’s emergency operations centre said in a statement, with cases concentrated in greater Khartoum’s Karari and Jabal Awlia localities.

The more than two-year-old war between the Sudanese army, which took full control of Khartoum state this week, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has spread hunger and disease and destroyed most health facilities.

Drone attacks on power stations, fuel depots and dams have knocked out power and running water, creating conditions for the spread of cholera, dengue fever, malaria and other diseases.

“Public services, already under enormous strain, struggled to cope with the compounded challenges brought by prolonged power loss,” the United Nations said in a report on Thursday.

The army, now facing accusations of use of chemical weapons, blames the RSF for the drone attacks.

Ground fighting is currently concentrated in the west of the country, in the Kordofan and Darfur regions as the army attempts to push the RSF further back.

Fighting broke out between the army and RSF in April 2023 after disagreements about the integration of the two forces during a transition to democracy.
