Work on Ukraine peace memorandum at ‘advanced stage’ – Lavrov

A new round of talks between Moscow and Kiev will take place, but the Vatican is not “a very realistic” venue, the Russian Foreign Minister has said

Moscow is at an “advanced stage” in preparing a memorandum that outlines steps toward a potential peace agreement with Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

Addressing a conference in Moscow, Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s readiness to continue dialogue with Kiev, following the resumption of talks in Istanbul earlier this month after a three-year pause.

"Yes, we support the idea of talks. There will be a second round of negotiations. They [the Ukrainian side] have confirmed this. This is already a positive development,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that he had agreed with US President Donald Trump that the next move toward resolving the Ukraine conflict should be a memorandum outlining the principles and timeline for a peace settlement.

When asked about theprogress in preparing the memorandum, the Russian foreign minister said: “I don’t know about the other side, but our work is already at an advanced stage. And in any case, we will hand over this memorandum to the Ukrainians, as we agreed, andwe will expect that they will do the same.”

The timeframe for the next meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations has “not yet been determined,” he said.

“Many people are speculating about when and where it might happen. We do not have any ideas at the moment,” Lavrov added.

Lavrov noted the offer from the Vatican, supported by Trump, to host further talks between Moscow and Kiev, but described the likelihood as “not very realistic.”

“Well, it is a little awkward, I would say. When Orthodox countries are using a Catholic platform to discuss issues related to eliminating root causes [of the conflict between them],” Lavrov said.

“One of those root causes is the course towards the destruction of the [canonical] Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC)”by the government in Kiev, the minister noted.

Kiev has accused the UOC of maintaining ties to Russia, despite the church’s formal declaration of independence from the Moscow Patriarchate in May 2022. The crackdown has included multiple arrests of clergy and raids on church properties. One of the most high-profile incidents occurred in the catacombs of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, where sacred relics are housed.

On Saturday morning U.S. Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, apprehended a Deep State asset whose name laymen may find unfamiliar but who, from the shadows, has influenced the illegal Biden administration’s domestic policy decisions on a grand scale. That person is Anita Dunn, a political strategist who served as Biden’s chief advisor until her resignation on August 12. Although Dunn declined to comment on her reasons, she abruptly quit her position after FOX News unearthed a quote attributed to her; at a 2009 speech to graduating high schoolers, Dunn said Chinese dictator Mao Zedong was one of her “favorite political philosophers,” Moreover, she refused to file the public financial disclosure required of every other presidential appointee.

A JAG source speaking under promise of anonymity told RRN that Dunn had met privately with Deep State Dr. Fauci 7 times since January. At a May meeting Dunn, who has no medical credentials, whimsically suggested to Dr. Fauci that Americans ought to receive quarterly Covid-19 vaccinations, and Fauci, who is an M.D. but has not treated patients since 1977, replied, “Of course it’s a great idea. The more shots we get in arms, the better.”

“I can’t speak to how we obtained recordings of their conversations, but we have them. They had several meets discussing how best to enforce vaccination mandates, and at each meeting they upped the number of shots they thought people should get every year. Dunn’s family has strong ties to the pharmaceutical lobbying industry, and Dr. Fauci has earned enormous profit from vaccine sales. It’s important to remember that Dunn was groomed by Obama. We have her on tape saying that people that die from the vaccine are just collateral damage,” our source said.

Dunn also advocated lockdowns on behalf of the illegitimate administration. In early 2021, she made multiple trips to California, Michigan, and New York to lobby the states’ respective governors to maintain draconian-style lockdowns and bankrupt as many businesses as possible—so the owners would have no choice but to rely on federal assistance, a tenet of Socialism.

“This woman was a major player in the Deep State’s plandemic conspiracy. And even now, as those plandemic plans come crashing down around them, they’re trying to double down and lockdown this country like Australia and Germany. The evidence against Dunn is massive, and it compelled JAG and the OMC to seek her arrest,” our source said.

On Friday, November 19, Rear Adm. David G. Wilson of JAG reached out to Gen. David Berger, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, with instructions to “apprehend immediately and discretely Anita Dunn at her Bethesda, Maryland, home.”

It should be noted that Bethesda is a stronghold of Deep State activity, as if the Deep State hierarchy instructs its agents to congregate there for mutual protection. Yet they have been picked off one by one.

Gen. Berger acknowledged the instruction and ordered his subordinates to at once assemble a team to grab Dunn. Early Saturday morning an unknown number of Marines from the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion descended on Dunn’s home. They found Dunn asleep beside her husband Bob Bauer, another Obama stooge, and subdued them with zip ties and duct tape before they could come to their senses and start a fuss.

“The Marines apprehended both out of necessity. They were put in an unmarked vehicle and taken for processing,” our source said, adding that Dunn will most certainly face a military tribunal.

The fate of her husband is not known.

Burdened by charges of treason and sedition, former Biden handler Anita Dunn tried without success to paint herself as a “peripheral” player in the Obama/Biden political landscape, saying that although she had advised the administration on myriad domestic issues, she had never committed or endorsed criminal activity either alone or as part of a team with administration officials. Any evidence to the contrary, she said during an opening statement, was wholly fabricated.

Her testimonial, however, did not impress Rear Adm. Darse E. Crandall, who arrived at GITMO’s south courtroom only hours after overseeing the execution of Gavin Newsom. Dressed in a starched uniform bristling with ribbons, he made it known that deception would not be tolerated in his court.

“Mrs. Dunn, I must admit, I find your statement somewhat amusing. That chair you’re sitting in—every person to have sat there before you have professed innocence, knowing full well they wouldn’t be sitting there if we didn’t have damn compelling evidence against them. And faced with the fact they will likely get sentenced to death for their crimes, they still say ‘it wasn’t me’ or ‘I was just following orders’ rather than confess and possibly receive a sentence other than death. It boggles the mind,” Rear Adm. Crandall said.

He continued, “Rather than highlight your lengthy history of criminal transgressions dating back to the Obama years and dragging this out indefinitely, we’ll focus on present day. We have evidence proving that you, on behalf of the administration, and Dr. Fauci met several times to arbitrarily discuss how many booster shots people would need each year. That you, a person with no medical credentials, wantonly and whimsically came up with the number 6 after Fauci, who we’ll see soon enough, said 4. We know you’ve profited from vaccine sales. We can prove you were the middleman acting as a go-between during the initial phase of the pandemic, advising Newsom, Cuomo, and Whitmer on how to shutter their states’ businesses and bankrupt economies so citizens would be dependent on federal assistance. Even your husband is here today to testify against you.”

Spousal testimonial privilege, Dunn argued, precluded her spouse, Bob Bauer, from testifying against her. “You can’t compel Bob to incriminate me,” she said.

Rear Adm. Crandall reminded her that a military commission is not bound by the same judicial restraints that govern civil criminal proceedings. Moreover, he said JAG had not compelled Bauer to say anything, for he was a cooperating witness.

Dunn started to crack. Her lower lip trembled and tears streamed down her face. For a moment it seemed as though she might spill the beans, confess everything, but her tears evaporated and any hint of sadness or remorse vanished from a suddenly indifferent face.

“No, no, no, you will not intimidate me,” Dunn said. “I know my right; I won’t cooperate with this abomination you call a tribunal.”

“So be it,” Rear Adm. Crandall said, a trace of exasperation in his voice. “This panel will hear what your husband has to say tomorrow morning. I promise you this, Mrs. Dunn, your fate will be decided tomorrow.”

He put the tribunal in recess until Tuesday morning.

About 12,000 light-years away toward the constellation Ophiuchus, the cluster's starlight is dimmed and reddened by the Milky Way's interstellar dust when viewed from planet Earth. As a result, the stars of NGC 6366 look almost golden in this telescopic scene, especially when seen next to relatively bright, bluish, and nearby star 47 Ophiuchi. Compared to the hundred thousand stars or so gravitationally bound in distant NGC 6366, 47 Oph itself is a binary star system a mere 100 light-years away. Still, the co-orbiting stars of 47 Oph are too close together to be individually distinguished in the image.

She did, however, have her head put in a noose at Guantanamo Bay, where she was hanged to death following a lengthy, self-imposed hunger strike that began on January 27 when a military court convicted the former Biden handler of treason and imposed the maximum allowable punishment—death.

GITMO sources told Real Raw News that Dunn was starving herself in protest of what she called “the military’s unlawful apprehension and prosecution of democratically-elected officials and the people who served under them.” She refused solid food and drank only water during her stay at the nation’s most infamous detention center. The normally portly Dunn had lost 15 pounds, according to a pre-execution medical evaluation, by the time GITMO security escorted her from a 6×9’ cell to the execution site early Monday morning.

Upon Emerging handcuffed from a Humvee, Dunn smugly berated Rear Adm. Crandall and other officers in attendance, her maundering speech infused with fiery hatred, and 7 times she invoked the name of a man not in attendance, hissing his name from between chapped lips.

“Trump. This is all Trump’s doing, isn’t it? You’re following Trump. Trump isn’t president, Joseph Biden is. Eventually there’ll be a reckoning, for all of you, and for Trump,” she said.

Her hunger strike hadn’t sapped her verbal strength, but still she looked frailer and feebler than she had at the tribunal. Sunken cheeks and vacant hollow eyes revealed a person stripped of vigor. It was as though she mustered her last ounces of strength to verbally assail the execution detail and Donald J. Trump.

“You won’t get away with this, and neither will Trump,” she said, as a uniformed Marine nudged her to the gallows.

Rear Adm. Crandall spoke: “Anita Dunn, Donald Trump didn’t put you where you stand. He didn’t tell you to commit treason. Your lack of self-awareness is endemic of all the people who have stood on that platform. I’m required to ask if you have final words, which I think you’ve already shared with us, or want Last Rites.”

She teetered on the platform, then fell over sideways as if struck by an icy gust, her hip slamming against the pivoting metal door designed to drop her to her doom. She yelped in pain as a soldier atop the platform stood her upright and put her neck in a braided noose. Her attitude changed suddenly. Dunn, lip trembling and eyes welling, called out for her husband, as if he were there, and begged for mercy.

“I don’t deserve this,” she said. “I’m sorry for anything I’ve done wrong, but I’m a good person.”

A moment later she was gone, her lifeless body twisting in the wind as it hung from the length of rope.

Dunn was pronounced dead at 9:07 a.m. Monday.

MEPs urge Brussels to cut all funding for Budapest

Lawmakers claim Hungary is undermining EU values with its policies

Over 20 members of the European Parliament have urged the European Commission to immediately freeze all EU funding to Hungary as a means of putting pressure on Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government. The demand comes as the bloc’s foreign ministers prepare to weigh potential sanctions,including a suspension of Budapest’s voting rights.

In a letter sent Tuesday to Budget Commissioner Piotr Serafin and Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath, 26 MEPsaccused Hungary of “violating EU values and EU laws.” They cited four specific actions, including a March law thateffectively bans pride parades in Hungary, a move consistent with Orban’s rejection of “LGBT ideology.”

The lawmakers alsoblasted proposed Hungarian legislation that would tighten oversight of political organizationsreceiving foreign funding, which critics argue wouldsuppress “civil society.”(how is it civil when they won’t allow dissent?)

The MEPs alleged that Budapest’s policies indicate that all EU funding for Hungary risks being misused and that a full freeze would be “proportionate” under the circumstances.

Hungarian MEP Csaba Domotor pushed back against the accusations,arguing that the targeted organizations serve foreign interestswith grants they receive from the EU, George Soros’ Open Society Foundation, and the recently defunded US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Hungary has repeatedly faced EU criticism for its conservative social policies, which don’t align with the bloc’s pro-LGBT agenda, and regulations requiring more transparency from foreign-funded organizations.

Budapest has also clashed with Brussels over support for Kiev and anti-Russian sanctions. Orban has warned that admitting Ukraine into the European Union risks drawing the bloc into the ongoing military conflict and called the European Commission’s plans to end all imports of Russian energy by the end of 2027 “absolute insanity.”

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said that such a move would sharply increase energy prices across the EU, seriously undermine member states’ national sovereignty, and harm European businesses.

Some EU officials, including Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, have advocated for stronger action, such as triggeringArticle 7of the EU Treaty to strip Hungary of its voting rights. Relevant proceedings against Hungary were launched in 2018.

The EU’s General Affairs Council,which is comprised of foreign and European affairs ministersfrom member states, is scheduled to discuss Hungary’s Article 7 case for the eighth time next Tuesday, according to the official agenda.

In an email to employees, the director’s office announced that a transition to fully onsite work will occur this year.

Colleagues,

A deeply engaged and collaborative culture defines JPL’s legacy of excellence and innovation. To advance that culture as we position for the future, JPL will be implementing a full return to onsite work for all employees.

We all know there are both challenges and opportunities ahead. We are likely facing a very tough budget environment — this is a time to have all hands on deck and to do everything we can to ensure the best possible future for the Lab.

We weighed this decision carefully. As we return, we will focus on cultivating relationship-building, mentoring, spontaneous interactions, and real-time problem-solving — all of which drive our most innovative work and will prepare us to meet the demands of today’s dynamic environment.

We recognize that a full return to in-person work is a significant change for many. Therefore, we are allowing longer than our telework policy mandates for people to fully return onsite.

General telework employees will have until Monday, August 25, to fully return to their assigned work location, and remote telework employees — both in and outside of California — will have until Monday, October 27.

Note that for those who can, we encourage returning to fully onsite work sooner than the required dates. Although rare exceptions are possible (see below), employees who do not return by their required date will be considered to have resigned.

Although our existing telework policy will be decommissioned, we’re maintaining flexible work benefits including RDO Fridays for employees on the 9/80 workweek schedule, up to two weeks of remote work from anywhere in the U.S. annually, and incidental telework for non-recurring or unplanned events (e.g., medical appointments or inclement weather).

Exceptions to the return-onsite mandate will be extremely rare and need to be worked through managers and ultimately approved by both a Director for and a small committee of Lab leadership.

We may make time-limited exceptions for employees who intend to relocate or return fully onsite but require additional time to do so due to extenuating circumstances, such as being impacted by the recent fires.

On the week of June 2, we will provide the exception form to managers. On the week of June 23, we will ask fully remote employees to indicate by July 20 whether they intend to return to help us prepare for anticipated onsite presence and office space transitions.

I encourage you to review the resources available for employees on the Human Resources site, including FAQs, and to discuss specific concerns or support for transition needs with your manager.

Trump threatens 50% tariff on EU from June 1

The US president said the new levy could enter into force due to trade imbalances with the bloc

US President Donald Trump has recommended a “straight 50% tariff” on the entire European Union,citing a $250 billion yearly trade deficit with the bloc. He suggested that the new rate will start being applied on June 1.

Writing on his Truth Social account on Friday, Trump suggested that the EU was initially formed “for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the US on Trade,” and stated that the bloc has been “very difficult to deal with.”

He further claimed that the EU’s economic policies, taxes, regulations and “unfair and unjustified lawsuits against American companies” have led to a trade deficit with the EU of “more than $250,000,000 a year,” which he described as “totally unacceptable.”

“Our discussions with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I am recommending a straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025,” Trump announced, adding that there would be no tariff on products “built or manufactured in the United States.”

In April, Trump imposed a sweeping 20% tariff on all EU goods as well as a 25% tariff on all car imports and metals. However, he later suspended the 20% levy for 90 days, keeping only a 10% baseline tariff.

Last week, the US president stated that the EU had proven to be very difficult to deal with regarding trade practices,claiming that the bloc was “in many ways nastier than China.”

“They treated us very unfairly,” Trump said. “They sell us 13 million cars; we sell them none. They sell us their agricultural products; we sell them virtually none,” he claimed, vowing that Washington would “equalize” the situation and that “Europe is gonna have to pay a little bit more…. And America is gonna pay a lot less.”

Friday’s announcement comes as Trump has significantly revamped Washington’s tariff policies since returning to office in January, claiming that the entire world had supposedly been taking advantage of the US.

On April 2, which he dubbed “Liberation Day,”Trump imposed a baseline 10% tariff on all goods imported to the country as well as additional surcharges on countries such as China, Mexico and Canada, citing significant trade imbalances.

Shortly after the move, he suggested that the US would later negotiate individual deals with all US trade partners. However, earlier this month, he announced that Washington would set the terms unilaterally. He explained that “it’s not possible to meet the number of people that want to see us,” claiming that the US had received deal requests from some 150 countries.

The White House has not yet disclosed the terms of these deals or the exact rates that would be applied.

NASA Supports Artemis Accords Signatories Advancing Exploration

The United States participated in an international Artemis Accords workshop May 21-22 to advance the safe and responsible exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which was represented by the UAE Space Agency, the workshop took place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

The Artemis Accords are a set of non-binding principles signed by nations for a peaceful and prosperous future in space for all of humanity to enjoy.

In October 2020, under the first Trump administration, the accords were created, and since then, 54 countries have joined with the United States in committing to transparent and responsible behavior in space.

“Following President Trump’s visit to the Middle East, the United States built upon the successful trip through engagement with a global coalition of nations to further implement the accords – practical guidelines for ensuring transparency, peaceful cooperation, and shared prosperity in space exploration,” said acting NASA Administrator Janet Petro.

“These accords represent a vital step toward uniting the world in the pursuit of exploration and scientific discovery beyond Earth.

NASA is proud to lead in the overall accords effort, advancing the principles as we push the boundaries of human presence in space – for the benefit of all.”

Participants from 30 countries joined the discussions and a tabletop exercise centered on defining challenges for operating in a complex environment.

As the Artemis Accords workshop concluded Thursday, participants reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the principles outlined in the accords and to continue identifying best practices and guidelines for safe and sustainable exploration.

The first workshop was hosted by Poland in 2023, followed by Canada in 2024.

Artemis Accords signatories have committed to sharing information about their activities to the United Nations of Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and other appropriate channels. Transparency and communication are key to peaceful exploration.

The Artemis Accords signatories will gather for face-to-face discussions on the margins of the International Astronautical Congress in late September, where workshop recommendations and outcomes will be presented to the Artemis Accords principals.

NASA anticipates additional countries will sign in the coming weeks and months.

The Artemis Accords are grounded in the Outer Space Treaty and other agreements, including the Registration Convention and the Rescue and Return Agreement, as well as best practices for responsible behavior that NASA and its partners have supported, including the public release of scientific data.

NASA Astronaut to Answer Questions from Students in Washington State

NASA astronaut and Spokane, Washington, native Anne McClain will participate in an event with students from the Mobius Discovery Center located in her hometown.

McClain will answer prerecorded questions submitted by students from aboard the International Space Station.

Ukraine wants fixed percentage of EU’s GDP

Kiev has urged the bloc’s members to directly fund the country’s military

Ukraine has proposed thatEU member states allocate a fixed portion of their GDP to fund the country’s armed forces. The bloc’s leaders have pledged continued military support for Kiev despite a policy change by US President Donald Trump, who aims to mediate a truce. (Ukraine is not even in the EU!)

Finance Minister Sergey Marchenko outlined the proposal during this week’s G7 finance ministers meeting in Canada, according to a Facebook post published on Thursday.

“What we are proposing is partner participation in funding Ukraine’s Armed Forces, which would effectively integrate them into Europe’s defense structure,” he wrote.(yes they want Nazis to protect Europe now.)

Marchenko added that the cost “would represent only a small share of the EU’s GDP” and could be distributed among countries willing to join the initiative.Kiev wants to launch the new scheme in 2026, with contributions counted toward NATO defense spending targets.

Marchenko’s appeal comes as Ukraine struggles with rising fiscal pressure and an uncertain outlook on foreign assistance. On Tuesday, MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak said the country’s 2025 budget includes a shortfall of 400–500 billion hryvnias ($9.6–12 billion) for financing its armed forces.

Fellow lawmaker Nina Yuzhanina warned that military supportwas at a critical level and called for sweeping domestic budget cuts to redirect resources.

Ukraine’s mounting debt has also raised alarm. Total state debt is approaching $171 billion, withpublic debt nearing 100% of GDP. Earlier this month, Marchenko said thecountry would be unable to repay foreign creditors for the next 30 yearsbut intends to continue borrowing.

Since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022, Ukraine has received billions in military, financial, and humanitarian aid and loans from the US, the EU, and other donors. Brussels’ approach has drawn criticism from some EU member states, including Hungary and Slovakia.

The US, Ukraine’s largest donor, has moved to recoup its financial aid to Ukraine by signing a natural resources deal with Kiev. The agreement, pushed by Trump, grants the US preferential access to Ukrainian mineral resources without providing security guarantees.

Trump, who has repeatedly called for a swift resolution to the conflict,has pledged to mediate a truce rather than expand military support. Ukrainian lawmakers have warned that the military aid package approved under former President Joe Biden will run out by summer, and no talks on further US deliveries are currently underway.

Russia has consistently condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, declaring that they will only prolong the conflict without changing its outcome, while also being an additional economic burden for ordinary taxpayers.

OPERA Project Releases Level 3 Displacement Products

NASA’s Observational Products for End-Users from Remote Sensing Analysis (OPERA) project at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California released the Level 3 Surface Displacement (DISP) product, which is derived from an interferometric time-series analysis of OPERA Level-2 Coregistered Single Look Complex from Sentinel-1 products (CSLC-S1s).

These products capture the displacement in the radar line-of-sight (i.e., motion towards or away from the radar) and provide information on anthropogenic and natural motion of Earth's surface, such as subsidence due to groundwater pumping, oil and gas extraction, and vertical and horizontal motion from volcanoes, tectonic faults, and landslides.

“This is a game changing product for looking at how the Earth's surface moves.

Every state in the U.S. has got land that's deforming or is changing, be it from landslides, earthquakes, volcanoes, sinkholes, hydrocarbon extraction, and so on,” said Dr. Gerald Bawden, Program Scientist for OPERA and the upcoming NASA-Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission.

“Satellite radar allows us to measure how the land surface changes by as little as a few millimeters, and every time the radar satellite passes over, we get another image and we're able to see how much land surface has changed from one time to the next.”

The OPERA project currently offers the DISP Sentinel-1 (DISP-S1) product and plans to provide a NISAR DISP (DISP-NI) product in the near future.

Each Sentinel-1 (S1) satellite carries a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument that can map Earth’s landmasses once up to every 6 days when combined with data from the S1-A/B/C satellite constellation.

DISP-S1 covers much of North America, including the United States and all its Territories, parts of Canada within 200 kilometers of the U.S. border, and all mainland countries from the southern U.S. border down to and including Panama.

OPERA creates the DISP-S1 product as soon as the satellite data input becomes available. It is then distributed as frame-based granules on a fixed grid to enable easy time series analysis.

Each granule contains both data raster layers and product metadata stored in the Hierarchical Data Format version 5 (HDF5) format, with a 30-meter pixel spacing in East and North directions on a UTM coordinate system.

Until now, there were no free and accessible InSAR time-series displacement products available over North America.

The OPERA Surface Displacement products fill this gap by making satellite radar data more accessible to a broad range of users, including national and state government personnel, emergency responders, urban planners and civil engineers, water resources managers, and researchers in a variety of disciplines.

“The ultimate goal is to make these sophisticated Earth observation products accessible to anyone who needs them, regardless of technical expertise, to support better decision-making about our changing planet,” said OPERA Project Scientist Dr. Steven Chan.

The OPERA project is developing the DISP-S1 Level 3 product in segments focused on three geographic areas—the southwestern U.S., the northern U.S., and the Pacific Northwest and Alaska—all of which will be completed by the end of the year.

The product will be rolled out in two phases. During Phase 1, which runs from now through the end of 2025, the OPERA team will develop historical data between July 2016 and December 2024.

In Phase 2, the team will create any remaining historical data and all new products as the data become available.

About OPERA

The OPERA project is managed by JPL, with partners from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the University of Maryland College Park, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Southern Methodist University.

Every two years, the multi-agency Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) conducts a survey to identify gaps in the current suite of NASA datasets to meet U.S. federal agency needs.

Following the 2018 and 2022 surveys, OPERA was tasked to develop products that were among the top interagency needs. These products were dynamic surface water extent, surface disturbance, surface displacement, and vertical land motion.

All OPERA products, including the Level 3 DISP-S1 products and their intermediate Coregistered Single-look Complex products, are accessible through the Alaska Satellite Facility Distributed Active Archive Center (ASF DAAC) and the NASA Earthdata Search portal.

Sol 4546: Martian Jenga

Mars Science Laboratory Mission Team Members

Have you ever played the game Jenga, where you remove one wooden block from a stack, gently place it on another part of the stack, then repeat over and over as you try to keep the stack from toppling over?

There are strategies to the game such as what blocks you can afford to remove, and where you can manage to place them without throwing the structure out of balance.

That is very much how planning felt today — but instead of wooden blocks, the objects the science team was moving around were science observations in the plan.

We had an unusual one-sol plan today so there were very restricted time windows in the plan in which to fit science observations and our next drive.

We are driving through an area with criss-crossing fracture sets (which we call boxwork structures) large enough to be seen from orbit.

Since they have only recently come within our view, there is no shortage of new observations to make of the fractures as we try to understand the processes that led to their formation.

If the fractures were caused by extensive fluid flow through the Martian crust, understanding them would be an important contribution toward tracing the history of Martian water.

To fit in all the desired observations — including APXS and MAHLI on a DRT-brushed target, multiple ChemCam RMI and Mastcam mosaics, and a ChemCam LIBS analysis

— in addition to environmental monitoring activities and a long drive, the team used every trick in its book to achieve a delicate balancing act of science, time, and power.

Some activities were trimmed to fit in smaller time windows, others were moved to less-constrained parts of the plan, and other activities were placed in parallel with each other to take advantage of Curiosity’s ability to multitask.

Once our planning Jenga game was over, the team had won — we had a complete and perfectly balanced plan! Who says you cannot teach an old dog (4,546-sols-old) new tricks?

Sols 4547-4548: Taking in the View After a Long Drive

Monday’s single-sol plan included a marathon 45-meter drive (about 148 feet), which put us in position for two full sols of imaging.

This means both sols have what we call “targeted” science blocks, in which we have images of the workspace down from the last plan and can carefully choose what we want to take a closer look at.

This always means a lot of good discussion amongst the geology and mineralogy theme group (GEO) about what deserves this closer look.

As an outsider on the environmental theme group (ENV), I don’t always grasp the complexities of these discussions, but it’s always interesting to see what GEO is up to and to learn new things about the geology of Mount Sharp.

GEO ended up picking “Big Bear Lake” as our contact science target, which is getting its typical treatment from APXS and MAHLI, as well as a LIBS observation from ChemCam.

Aside from that there was plenty of room for remote sensing. ChemCam is also taking a LIBS observation of “Volcan Mountains” and a long-distance mosaic of the Texoli butte.

Mastcam is also taking mosaics of a nearby trough, as well as two depressions known as “Sulphur Spring,” a more distant boxwork structure, and the very distant Mishe Mokwa butte.

All of ENV’s activities are remote sensing, and we managed to squeeze in a few of those too.

We have a couple dust monitoring observations, looking for dust devils and checking the amount of dust in the atmosphere. And since we’re still in the cloudy season we always try to make room for cloud observations.

Today that meant a suraphorizon movie looking for clouds just above the horizon to the south, and a phase function sky survey, which captures clouds all around the rover, to try to understand how these clouds scatter sunlight.

German justice minister floats ban on largest opposition party

Stefanie Hubig promises a thorough probe into whether the right-wing AfD poses a “threat to democracy”

Germany’s Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig has called for a serious examination into whether Alternative for Germany (AfD) should be banned, following the domestic intelligence agency’s suspension of its classification of the political party as a “confirmed right-wing extremist” group amid a public backlash.

In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published on Thursday, Hubig emphasized the need to consider all legal avenues, claiming that the AfD must be taken seriously as a potential threat to democratic order.

“The AfD is not a party like any other… Therefore, we need to take the party as a possible danger for our democracy very seriously. It is essential to consider a party ban,”she said. (It’s too much like MAGA that is why they won’t stop the persecution.)

Hubig acknowledged thatbanning a political party is the most severe measure available in a democracy and should not be employed hastily. However, she argued that if a thorough investigation by the Interior Ministry and other relevant authorities reveals that the legal conditions for a ban are met, it “would not be difficult” to justify such a move.

“Of course, thoroughness comes before speed, but we do not have forever,” she added, when asked whether there was a timeline for reaching a decision on a potential ban. The new German government – a coalition between Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservatives and the SPD – will discuss the possibility of pursuing a ban and formulate a joint response. However, Hubig cast doubt on whether “the procedure would be successful or not.”

The AfD secured second place in February’s federal elections with 20.8% of the vote, but has been excluded from coalition talks and government formation. When asked whether she was concerned about disenfranchising so many voters, Hubig claimed that it is “irrelevant”how many people support a party if authorities ultimately deem it unconstitutional.

Earlier this month, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution(BfV) upgraded the AfD’s classification from “suspected” to “confirmed right-wing extremist” – but quickly suspendedthe designation pending a court ruling on the party’s legal appeal.

The AfD condemned the move as “a severe blow to German democracy” and filed a lawsuit. Co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla welcomed the temporary suspension, calling it “a first important step.” The now-paused designationwould have allowed the BfV to expand surveillance of the AfD without judicial oversight; the downgraded “suspected case”status still permits monitoring, but under stricter conditions.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindtacknowledged this weekthat the BfV’s 1,100-page report – which has not been made public –lacks concrete evidence that the AfD poses a serious threat to democracy or the rule of law that would justify a legal ban.

Chancellor Merz has also expressed skepticism about pursuing a ban,citing both legal complexity and the potential political fallout. He stressed the need toaddress the underlying causes of the AfD’s popularity. At the same time, Merz urged Washington to “stay out” of Germany’s domestic politics, after top US officials claimed the EU’s largest economy had become “a tyranny in disguise” and had “rebuilt”the Berlin Wall. NASA and SpaceX now are targeting 12:05 p.m. EDT Friday, May 23, for the undocking of company’s 32nd commercial resupply services mission from the International Space Station.

Live coverage of Dragon spacecraft undocking and departure begins at 11:45 a.m. on NASA+. Mission teams will continue to review weather conditions off the coast of California ahead of Dragon’s departure from the orbital complex.

After re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, the spacecraft will splash down at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, May 25, off the coast of California. NASA will post updates on the agency’s space station blog. There is no livestream video of the splashdown.

EU state accuses Ukraine of spying

Kiev has “deep connections” with opposition parties in Hungary, PM Viktor Orban has said

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused Ukraine ofintensifying espionage activities in the EU member nation by leveraging opposition political forces. The claim comes amid a mounting diplomatic rift between the neighboring countries.

Long-standing tensions between Hungary and Ukraine escalated earlier this month when both countries expelled two diplomats each after accusing one another of espionage.

“Ukrainian activity has greatly increased in Hungary, and they are organizing operational actions as well,” Orban said on Friday in an interview with Kossuth Radio. He emphasized that the “Ukrainian intelligence service maintains deep connections” with the Hungarian opposition.

Orban claimed that Kiev recently fabricated a story about Hungarian spies, saying it had “nothing to do with us.”

The prime minister accused theUkrainian network allegedly operating in Hungary of spreading “pro-war, pro-Ukrainian propaganda,”and imposing “pro-Ukrainian viewpoints” that run counter to Hungary’s national interests.

Earlier this month, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed it dismantled a Hungarian military intelligence network said to be operating in Transcarpathia, Ukraine’s westernmost region. A spokesman said two Ukrainian military veterans – a man and a woman – were detained as part of the operation.

The Hungarian Foreign Ministry dismissed the allegations as anti-Hungarian propaganda. In response to Kiev’s espionage claims, theHungarian authorities deported an alleged former Ukrainian spy who Budapest described as “a serious threat to Hungary’s sovereignty.”

On Friday, Orban also claimed that Ukrainian agents were attempting to establish contactswith opposition parties in Hungary to influence public opinion in favor of Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“Their intelligence services are conducting operations on Hungarian territory to somehow force the Hungarian government to make such a decision against our interests,” he stressed, adding thatUkraine is using significant funds for these purposes and attempting to “deploy serious resources.”

Tensions between the neighbors have intensified since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, with Hungary refusing to supply weapons or support Kiev’s EU bid. Budapest has also maintained ties with Moscow despite pressure from EU top officials.

Budapest has also long accused Kiev of discriminating against the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. Hungary has criticized Ukrainian laws that limit education and public administration in minority languages, arguing that they infringe upon the rights of ethnic Hungarians.

Percolating Clues: NASA Models New Way to Build Planetary Cores

A new NASA study reveals a surprising way planetary cores may have formed—one that could reshape how scientists understand the early evolution of rocky planets like Mars.

Conducted by a team of early-career scientists and long-time researchers across the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, the study offers the first direct experimental and geochemical evidence that molten sulfide, rather than metal, could percolate through solid rock and form a core—even before a planet’s silicate mantle begins to melt.

For decades, scientists believed that forming a core required large-scale melting of a planetary body, followed by heavy metallic elements sinking to the center.

This study introduces a new scenario—especially relevant for planets forming farther from the Sun, where sulfur and oxygen are more abundant than iron. In these volatile-rich environments, sulfur behaves like road salt on an icy street—it lowers the melting point by reacting with metallic iron to form iron-sulfide so that it may migrate and combine into a core.

Until now, scientists didn’t know if sulfide could travel through solid rock under realistic planet formation conditions.

The study results gave researchers a way to directly observe this process using high-resolution 3D imagery—confirming long-standing models about how core formation can occur through percolation, in which dense liquid sulfide travels through microscopic cracks in solid rock.

“We could actually see in full 3D renderings how the sulfide melts were moving through the experimental sample, percolating in cracks between other minerals,” said Dr. Sam Crossley of the University of Arizona in Tucson, who led the project while a postdoctoral fellow with NASA Johnson’s ARES Division.

“It confirmed our hypothesis—that in a planetary setting, these dense melts would migrate to the center of a body and form a core, even before the surrounding rock began to melt.”

Recreating planetary formation conditions in the lab required not only experimental precision but also close collaboration among early-career scientists across ARES to develop new ways of observing and analyzing the results.

The high-temperature experiments were first conducted in the experimental petrology lab, after which the resulting samples—or “run products”—were brought to NASA Johnson’s X-ray computed tomography (XCT) lab for imaging.

X-ray scientist and study co-author Dr. Scott Eckley of Amentum at NASA Johnson used XCT to produce high-resolution 3D renderings—revealing melt pockets and flow pathways within the samples in microscopic detail.

These visualizations offered insight into the physical behavior of materials during early core formation without destroying the sample.

The 3D XCT visualizations initially confirmed that sulfide melts could percolate through solid rock under experimental conditions, but that alone could not confirm whether percolative core formation occurred over 4.5 billion years ago. For that, researchers turned to meteorites.

NASA’s Moffett Federal Airfield Hosts Boeing Digital Taxi Tests

New technology tested by an industry partner at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley could improve how commercial planes taxi to and from gates to runways, making operations safer and more efficient on the surfaces of airports.

Airport taxiways are busy. Planes come and go while support vehicles provide maintenance, carry fuel, transport luggage, and more.

Pilots must listen carefully to air traffic control when getting directions to the runway – and garbled communications and heavy workloads can cause issues that could lead to runway incursions or collisions.

Researchers at Boeing are working to address these issues by digitizing taxiway information and automating aircraft taxi functions.

The team traveled to NASA Ames to collaborate with researchers while testing their technology at the Moffett Federal Airfield and NASA’s FutureFlight Central, an air traffic control simulation facility.

To test these new technologies, Boeing brought a custom single-engine test plane to the airfield.

Working from FutureFlight Central, their researchers developed simulated taxiway instructions and deployed them to the test pilot’s digital tablet and the autonomous system.

Typically, taxiing requires verbal communication between an air traffic controller and a pilot. Boeing’s digital taxi release system displays visual turn-by-turn routes and directions directly on the pilot’s digital tablet.

“This project with Boeing lends credibility to the research being done across Ames,” said Adam Yingling, autonomy researcher for the Air Traffic Management-eXploration (ATM-X) program at NASA Ames.

“We have a unique capability with our proximity to Moffett and the work Ames researchers are doing to advance air traffic capabilities and technologies to support the future of our national airspace that opens the door to work alongside commercial operators like Boeing.”

The team’s autonomous taxiing tests allowed its aircraft to follow the air traffic control’s digital instructions to transit to the runway without additional pilot inputs.

As commercial air travel increases and airspace gets busier, pilots and air traffic controllers have to manage heavier workloads.

NASA is working with commercial partners to address those challenges through initiatives like its Air Traffic Management-eXploration project, which aims to transform air traffic management to accommodate new vehicles and air transportation options.

“In order to increase the safety and efficiency of our airspace operations, NASA research in collaboration with industry can demonstrate how specific functions can be automated to chart the course for enhancing traffic management on the airport surface,” said Shivanjli Sharma, ATM-X project manager at Ames.
