Plane crash kills at least 1 person in upstate New York, authorities say

A plane carrying six people crashed in an open field near Copake, N.Y., Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

At least one person was killed, Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore said in a press conference Saturday afternoon but could not specify how many other passengers survived.

The plane did not hit any structures on the way down, Salvatore told reporters, and the crash site is difficult to access because of muddy conditions. It was unclear as of Saturday what had caused the plane to crash, Salvatore said.

Officials from the sheriff's office, New York State Police, and a local fire department assisted after a 911 call came in around noon.

The Mitsubishi MU-2B-40 was flying to the Columbia County Airport in Hudson, N.Y., the FAA noted.

Trump administration freezes $1 billion in funding for Cornell University, $790 million for Northwestern University

The Trump administration is freezing $790 million in federal funding to Northwestern University and more than $1 billion in funding to Cornell University, a White House official told CNN.

”The money was frozen in connection with several ongoing, credible, and concerning Title VI investigations,” a Trump administration official said, referring to a federal statute that prohibits discrimination in programs and activities that receive federal funding.

The New York Times first reported the freeze on Northwestern and Cornell funding.

The move adds to similar actions the administration has taken against several elite universities, either demanding changes to their diversity, equity and inclusion programs, or in connection with their handling of protests against the war in Gaza.

Cornell is “aware of media reports” about the funding freezing, but has not received information that would confirm the $1 billion figure, it said in a statement. However, the university has received “more than 75 stop work orders from the Department of Defense related to research that is profoundly significant to American national defense, cybersecurity, and health.”

“We are actively seeking information from federal officials to learn more about the basis for these decisions,” the statement said, adding it has “worked diligently to create an environment where all individuals and viewpoints are protected and respected.”

In a statement to CNN, Northwestern University said it also found about the funding freeze from the media and hasn’t “received any official notification from the federal government.”

“Federal funds that Northwestern receives drive innovative and life-saving research, like the recent development by Northwestern researchers of the world’s smallest pacemaker, and research fueling the fight against Alzheimer’s disease,” the statement said. “This type of research is now at jeopardy. The University has fully cooperated with investigations by both the Department of Education and Congress.”

On March 14, the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, announced it had opened Title VI investigations into 45 universities, emphasizing it has “reiterated” the schools’ “civil rights obligations to end the use of racial preferences and stereotypes in education programs and activities.”

Last Friday, Harvard University received a letter outlining policy demands in order to keep $9 billion in federal funding. Some of the requests included the elimination of Harvard’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs and a ban on masks at campus protests, student-run newspaper The Harvard Crimson and other outlets reported.

Brown University also learned last week that $510 million in grant money was at risk as the Trump administration reviewed the university’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies and its response to antisemitism.

Princeton University and Columbia University have also suffered funding losses in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, the US Department of Commerce announced Princeton University would lose nearly $4 million in federal funding for climate research programs.

The funding cuts, tied to a review of grants under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, reflect the administration’s effort to scale back support for programs it says do not align with its priorities. They come after the administration announced last week it has suspended research grants totaling $210 million to Princeton University as part of an ongoing investigation into antisemitism on campus.

The revocation of funding has left universities walking on eggshells, desperate to keep much-need funding. Students at Columbia University report a tense mood on campus after being center stage in the Trump administration’s multi-prong fight against protests at colleges around the country last year, including deportation efforts against some international students who took part in the demonstrations.

American Experiment has exclusively obtained the complete 54-minute, 44-second audio file of a private December 2021 meeting between state Attorney General (AG) Keith Ellison and key figures in the Feeding Our Future scandal.

As I wrote last week, the audio file was named as Exhibit 710 on the evidence list presented to the court by Aimee Bock’s defense attorney, Kenneth Udoibok. The recording was not offered into evidence during the six-week trial that concluded last month, with Bock’s conviction on all seven counts she faced. WorldPride, a global LGBTQ rights festival set to start next month in Washington, D.C., is cautioning transgender attendees about traveling to the United States as the Trump administration cracks down on trans people through executive orders defining gender as either male or female based on sex assigned at birth.

•Ryan Bos, executive director of WorldPride organizer Capital Pride Alliance, said this week he is weighing issuing a statement urging trans individuals not to travel to the United States to attend WorldPride, a global event that attracts thousands of international visitors.

•President Donald Trump’s day-one executive order mandated federal agencies to recognize sex as either male or female based on what was assigned at birth, which would impact passports and other forms of government identification.

•Capital Pride Alliance previously told Forbes federal contractor Booz Allen Hamilton withdrew support from WorldPride this year to ensure it complies with President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting diversity, equity and inclusion across the federal government.

•Forbes has reached out to Capital Pride Alliance for comment.

Pride Houston told Forbes some organizations had slashed support by as much as 75%, leaving the organization $100,000 short. The organization’s board of directors said the “current political and economic climate has had a significant impact on sponsorship levels from corporations across a variety of sectors.” NYC Pride told Forbes some organizations scaled back budgets while others stalled on making decisions, though the organization declined to specify which companies had done so.

What Is Worldpride?

WorldPride is a global LGBTQ Pride festival held every few years by InterPride and a host city’s local LGBTQ organizations. This year’s festival is planned to run from May 17 to June 8 in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Capital Pride Alliance. Previous hosts have included New York City in 2019, held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, as well as Sydney in 2023, Madrid in 2017 and Toronto in 2014. The events typically draw millions of visitors, including thousands from other countries. New York’s then-mayor Bill de Blasio said an estimated 5 million people attended New York’s WorldPride in 2019, making it the largest LGBTQ Pride event in history.

How Has The Trump Administration Targeted Trans People?

Trump has issued several executive orders specifically targeting the transgender community. His day-one executive order, “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” directed the federal government to recognize sex as unchangeably male or female. He also issued an order banning trans troops from the military and another barring trans women from participating in women’s sports. Nearly five years after fueling the largest protest movement in American history, Black activism stands at a generational, emotional and strategic crossroads.

Why it matters: Many of the Black Americans who flooded the streets in 2020 have stepped back from the renewed anti-Trump protests — torn between the urgency of the moment and the spiritual toll of relentless, often fruitless resistance.

The stakes are huge: President Trump's second-term agenda is openly hostile to DEI, police reform, and the civil rights protections that have underpinned racial progress for the last half-century.

But prominent Black activists tell Axios that rest does not equal retreat, and that the movement is evolving — in leadership, tone and tactics — for the long fight ahead.

Driving the news: Photos from last weekend's "Hands Off!" demonstrations — where millions protested DOGE cuts, immigration raids and mass federal layoffs — show a striking shift from 2020.

Most participants were older and white, as seen at rallies across the country and confirmed to Axios — a stark contrast to the multiracial, Black-led protests launched in the wake of George Floyd's murder.

Campus protests over Trump's immigration crackdown have drawn primarily white, Latino, and Asian American students, with Black participants largely absent from the front lines.

In Washington, D.C., Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House was quietly dismantled last month after funding threats from Republicans — a symbolic setback in what once was the epicenter of 2020's racial reckoning.

Zoom in: A viral video from last weekend showed Black Americans enjoying brunch in Atlanta — a historical hub of Black political power and culture — while white "Hands Off!" demonstrators marched outside.

Many Black advocates active in the 2020 racial reckoning protests have declared online that they're not interested in rejoining public demonstrations right now.

Others told Axios they're emotionally drained and need a "break" after the demoralizing defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black woman nominated for president by a major political party.

Harris won 86% of Black voters overall, but Trump improved his vote share among Black men from 19% in 2020 to 21% in 2024.

Some Black women saw Donald Trump's victory as a wake-up call to turn inward and prioritize self-care, especially after voters overlooked his record of racist comments for a second time.

"It's definitely a feeling of, 'I'm not going to push myself to the point of exhaustion,' " said Nina Smith, a strategist who has worked with the Movement for Black Lives. "The best way I can show up in this moment is to take care of myself."

The big picture: Some organizers say Black activism is shifting away from mass mobilization and toward quieter strategies: economic pressure campaigns, digital organizing and coalition-building behind the scenes.

Activists point to rising fears of targeted state violence under Trump, including the risk that Black protesters could be surveilled, detained or worse — a fear underscored by the treatment of legal residents caught up in immigration raids.

"People are trying to prepare themselves for the long haul here," said Steve Phillips, author of "How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good."

Between the lines: The movement also is undergoing a generational shift, as older figures from the Civil Rights era pass the baton to new voices who came of age in a more diverse America.

Rev. Jamal Bryant, who recently met with the legendary civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, launched a 40-day national boycott of Target over its rollback of DEI initiatives.

Political commentator Angela Rye has been quietly mobilizing leaders through private strategy sessions.

Latosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter, has emphasized the importance of rest, recognizing that Black Americans have been fighting for generations.

The other side: In text message chains and on social media, some Black advocates chided others for resting amid Trump's multi-pronged assault on DEI and other racial justice priorities.

They pointed out that civil rights icons Rosa Parks and Ella Baker didn't let regular defeats or roadblocks stop them from organizing and protesting.

But Rev. William Barber, who has spoken at recent rallies dominated by white participants, told Axios it's foolish to think civil rights leaders didn't need to rest while facing racial violence and planning long marches.

"Ella Baker knew how to have a Saturday party. She'd get down with some spades and some bid whist," Barber said, referring to card games. "Nobody is saying that people need to be constantly on the move."

Phillips added that rest is an important part of resistance. "When Harriet Tubman rounded up folks to flee the plantation, they didn't go without breaks for sleeping, right?"

The bottom line: Activists say the streets may feel quieter, but the fight is far from over.
