The Toronto rally was held on April 24, one day before the 26th anniversary of the April 25 “peaceful appeal” by Falun Gong practitioners in Beijing in 1999, when more than 10,000 adherents from across China assembled outside the appeals office to call for the release of 45 practitioners who had been arbitrarily detained by police in the eastern city of Tianjin.

They also called on the communist regime to lift a ban on Falun Gong books and to allow adherents a safe environment to practise their faith after incidents of authorities raiding practice sites, forcibly dispersing groups, and entering civilian residences without consent.

In fact, CBC sought comment from the local police regarding the legality of showing abortion victim photography.

Police spokesperson Adam Kimber told CBC that CCBR’s outreach is protected under free speech despite the fact that the billboards “may be disturbing.”

“Displaying graphic content is not in itself a criminal offence under Canadian law,” Kimber said. “Unless the material violates specific legal thresholds such as obscenity or hate speech, it is protected under the right to freedom of expression.”

Joe Tay, a candidate in Ontario who is from Hong Kong and pro-democracy, was forced to stop his campaign after getting a warning from security officials in the Canadian government that there was a CCP-linked repression campaign directly targeting him.

A candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) stopped his campaign due to threats linked to China’s Communist Chinese Party (CCP) government.

Joe Tay, who is the CPC MP candidate for Don Valley North, Ontario, was forced to stop his campaign after getting a warning from security officials in the Canadian government. He was warned that there was a CCP-linked repression campaign that was directly targeting him.

Tay is from Hong Kong and is a pro-democracy activist. The targets against him included mock “wanted” posters along with negative online commentary, as well as a campaign to tarnish his name on Chinese-language social media platforms.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been working with Tay to ensure he is safe; however, he stopped all in-person events out of caution.

The smear campaign against him is linked to both the CCP government and Hong Kong authorities.

In a statement, Tay said, “My priority is the safety of my team and supporters.”

Of note is that he has a HK$1 million bounty placed on him from the Hong Kong police, for his links to his pro-democracy activism.

Tay was given briefs by Canadian security officials on the threats made against him. The CPC has blasted the targets against Tay, with the party saying, “No candidate should face intimidation for their beliefs.”

Last week, CPC leader Pierre Poilievre called out Prime Minister Mark Carney directly for his ties to the CPC during last week’s election debate.

Japanese car giant Subaru will move its production of cars out of the United States as the Trump administration has imposed tariffs on goods and services from a variety of nations. Subaru sold over 68,000 cars in Canada in 2024, but the company is reconfiguring its supply chain to avoid the trade war.

According to the Daily Mail, the company sold over 17,700 cars in Canada that were made in America last year, making up about a quarter of all sales. But in 2026, Subaru's Canada location will slash US imports down to 10 percent of all cars sold in Canada and will instead import more inventory from Japan.

After 2026, the American-built Outback will no longer ship into Canada from the US, all models will instead be made in Japan. According to the outlet, the move from Subaru is meant to "minimize the impact" of the counter tariffs that have been imposed by the Trump administration, Subaru CEO Tomohiro Kubota said. For the car giant, it will be cheaper to build and ship out of Japan to deliver the cars in Canada.

The Trump administration imposed a 25 percent tariff on cars and related parts that would be imported into the United States from Canada. Unlike some of Trump's reciprocal tariffs that have been paused for 90 days, the tariffs on the vehicles are still in place, putting strain on the ability to import and export cars and car parts between the US and Canada.

The policies imposed by Trump have pushed some other car companies to invest more in the US, including Stellantis and others. However, the move from Subaru went the opposite direction. Although there has been a mixed response in the auto industry over the tariffs connected to cars, the reciprocal tariffs have pushed many countries to the negotiating table to make deals with America on trade.
