Trump Says Government Likely Won’t Be Using Signal After The Atlantic Fallout

But the president said it ’may be forced to use it' in the future.

President Donald Trump said on March 25 that government officials likely will not be using the Signal messaging app after The Atlantic magazine’s editor-in-chief was inadvertently included in a group chat with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and national security adviser Mike Waltz.

When asked about the Signal chat during remarks at the White House on March 25, Trump said: “A lot of times you find out defects by exactly things like that, but I don’t think it’s something we’re looking forward to using again.

“We may be forced to use it. You may be in a situation where you need speed as opposed to gross safety, and you may be forced to use it, but generally speaking, I think we probably won’t be using it very much.”

The fallout came after Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, alleged that he saw a discussion between Hegseth and other officials take place in a group chat he was added to in the Signal messaging app hours before strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen ordered by Trump earlier this month.

The National Security Council has since said the text chain Goldberg reported “appears to be authentic” and that it is looking into how a journalist’s number was added to the chain.

Hegseth spoke to reporters in Hawaii on March 24 and disputed Goldberg’s account, insisting that no war plans were texted in the chat. He also raised questions about Goldberg’s credibility. Goldberg, who published an article in The Atlantic about the group chat, later told MSNBC that his article was based on what he saw in the Signal chat. He accused Hegseth of trying to deflect from the allegations.

Signal uses end-to-end encryption for its messaging and calling services, which prevents any third party from viewing conversation content or listening in on calls. It is considered a popular app for direct messaging, group chats, phone calls, and video calls.

When asked about the use of the chat app, Trump said he “wasn’t involved” but only “heard about it.”

“I hear it’s used by a lot of groups,” he said. “It’s used by the media a lot. It’s used by a lot of the military and, I think, successfully, but sometimes somebody can get onto those things.

“That’s one of the prices you pay when you’re not sitting in the Situation Room with no phones on, which is always the best, frankly … the best is to be there.”

Earlier in the day, Trump told NBC News that Waltz or a member of his staff had added Goldberg to the chat but defended his national security adviser. He echoed those comments during his remarks in the White House on March 25 and said Waltz does not need to apologize. He suggested that news outlets’ response to the reports has been overblown.

“They’ve made a big deal out of this because we’ve had two perfect months,” Trump said, pivoting to the economy and policies he has initiated since taking office in January. “We’re bringing in business; we have another one announced tomorrow.”

After the recent reports, the president of Signal defended the app, although she did not directly address The Atlantic article.

“Signal is the gold standard in private comms,” Signal President Meredith Whittaker wrote in a post on social media platform X in response to a report that compared Signal to WhatsApp. She attempted to differentiate Signal from WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta Platforms.

Suspect Arrested for Murder of California Fire Captain Who Battled LA Wildfires

Authorities have finally arrested the suspect wanted for the murder of a beloved California fire captain who was brutally stabbed to death last month.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced that Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi, 53, is being charged with the murder of Rebecca “Becky” Marodi, 49.

Following her arraignment hearing on Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors revealed that the suspect was arrested in Mexico after being on the run for over a month.

Stephan’s office said Olejniczak Marodi pleaded not guilty at Wednesday’s hearing.

Olejniczak Marodi is being held without bail.

If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison.

On Sunday, authorities in Mexico nabbed Olejniczak Marodi.

As Slay News reported, she had been on the run for over a month since being named the suspect in Rebecca Marodi’s death on February 17.

“I want to thank the Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation and law enforcement on both sides of the border for locating and arresting this dangerous defendant so she could be returned to San Diego and face justice for this deadly crime,” Stephan shared in a news release

Investigators are still working to gather more information to determine the circumstances and motivation behind Capt. Marodi’s death.

“Rebecca Marodi was a beloved Fire Captain who devoted her life to protecting others, including recently battling the Eaton fire near Los Angeles, and the capture of her killer will begin the court process with today’s arraignment,” Stephan continued.

“When the U.S. Marshals’ San Diego Fugitive Task force is looking for violent criminals, they can run, but they can’t hide as we saw in this case.”

Yolanda was allegedly seen on surveillance video arguing with Rebecca and physically assaulting her on the day of the fatal stabbing.

A copy of the arrest warrant was obtained by KABC.

It details that Rebecca told Yolanda she was leaving her and ending their marriage nearly a week before she was murdered.

Detectives said that a voice could be heard yelling out, “Yolanda, please, I don’t want to die.”

The report read that Yolanda responded to Rebecca, saying:

“You should have thought about that before.”

She was reportedly standing in front of Rebecca with what appeared to be a knife in her hand.

Surveillance video captured Yolanda leaving the couple’s home before Rebecca’s mother arrived.

Rebecca was found with several injuries to her neck, chest, and back that authorities said were consistent with a stabbing.

Yolanda also previously served more than 13 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the death of her then-husband, James Joseph Olejniczak Jr..

She was released in 2013, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Investigators are still working to gather more information to determine the circumstances and motivation behind Capt. Marodi’s death.

“This intimate partner homicide is a reminder that there are resources out there for individuals who are in fear for their safety,” Stephan said.

A status conference and bail review hearing are set for April 28.

A preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for June 24.

How Trump caught big-government fans in their own trap

President Donald Trump is using every tool he has to challenge woke practices in America — and he has a lot of them.

Notably, none of the mechanisms that the president is using were put in place by conservatives for leverage against progressive institutions.

No, Trump is simply availing himself of the vast federal apparatus created by liberals on the assumption that an ever-more powerful and extensive federal government was synonymous with righteousness.

Expanding the federal government has been a progressive priority since the time of Woodrow Wilson, and now its tentacles — via federal funding and a skein of rules — reach into practically every corner of American life.

Universities are particularly dependent on government and intertwined with it.

They are quickly learning how uncomfortable it is when their paymaster isn’t ideologically aligned with them and is willing to throw his weight around.

A recent interview in the online publication Slate was headlined, “Colleges Are Getting in Line: An expert in higher-ed finance explains why every school in the US is vulnerable to Trump.”

“The power is essentially the same for every college in the country that gets federal funding,” said Robert Kelchen, a professor of higher education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, “and it does not make a difference whether it’s public or private.”

“If the federal government is giving money to students for research, all that money can be taken away,” he said. “And that’s the leverage that the federal government has over the vast majority of higher ed. Some large universities can get well over $1 billion a year in total revenue from the federal government.”

The interviewer asked, “Did any leaders in higher education recognize ahead of this the vulnerabilities that came with this dependence on the federal government?”

Kelchen’s answer was basically, “no.”

Even if the Trump approach has been more aggressive than anticipated, it shouldn’t be news that federal money comes with strings.

Universities already had to make all sorts of commitments to the feds to tap into funding. A University of Florida website says that among the assurances it has to make to the federal government are that it is in compliance with:

• federal discrimination regulations

• federal lobbying regulations

• federal regulations regarding promoting objectivity in research

• federal regulations regarding research misconduct

• Title VI of the Civil Rights Act

• Title IX of the Education Amendments

• Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

• National Occupational Safety and Health Act

• FDA Good Laboratory Practices Act

• Drug-Free Workplace Act

• Smoke-Free Workplace Act

On top of this, the Obama and Biden administrations used federal dollars as the lever to coerce educational institutions into adopting their preferred policies on the handling of sexual-assault cases and trans students.

Even still, citizens have expressed deep concern about the implications of intertwining art with sexual exploitation and child pornography.

“Protecting society’s most vulnerable, particularly our children, was a key motivator for my decision to run for office. It is crucial that our legal framework leaves no room for predators to misuse the realm of art to display child nudity. A federal appeals court on Wednesday temporarily blocked an order from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan directing Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to turn over records and answer questions about its efforts to slash the federal bureaucracy.

A three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit granted a stay of Chutkan’s directive, suggesting that the lower court judge must rule on the Trump administration’s motion to dismiss before allowing any discovery. It’s not a final ruling on whether DOGE must eventually turn over the records.

Soon after the panel’s decision, Chutkan canceled a status hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Chutkan’s order granting discovery marked the first time a judge ordered Musk to produce documents in a legal challenge to his and DOGE’s efforts to downsize the federal government and cut costs.

She said her order was meant to allow identification of DOGE personnel and “the parameters of DOGE’s and Musk’s authority.”

The request for information about DOGE came in a lawsuit by a coalition of states, led by New Mexico, which claims Musk’s vast role heading DOGE is unconstitutional since he wasn’t confirmed by the Senate. They’re seeking to block DOGE from accessing seven federal agencies.

Though the billionaire tech mogul is said to be leading DOGE’s sweeping cost-cutting efforts,the White House has maintained that Musk is not technically a part of DOGE, instead serving as a senior adviser to the president.

Chutkan, an appointee of former President Biden who also oversaw the federal election subversion criminal case against President Trump, previously declined to grant the request from the 14 Democratic state attorneys general for a temporary restraining order after finding they had not made the necessary showing of irreparable harm.

However, in a footnote, the judge suggested that the Justice Department may have stretched the truth in court filings regarding the breadth of DOGE’s power over personnel issues. She reminded the government of its duty to “make truthful representations to the court.”

DOGE has drawn dozens of legal challenges over its rapid efforts to install employees at federal agencies with an aim of cutting trillions of dollars in government spending.
