simple shapes and sometimes muted colors. A neat trick is to set the entire image to grayscale to see where in your image contains a lack of visual contrast. Also going off of real life places can help bring an air of familiarity to your drawing. A garden, the beach, a meadow, Victorian living room. what have you.

It's hard to remember since I was working on this on and off over the course of 5 days or so. I'd say around 30 hrs were spent drawing stuff that actually made it into the final product and another 20 hrs were spent drawing stuff that I got rid of or the background, which obviously didn't go too well. I was feeling pretty burnt out by the end of this.
I'm worried about drawing stuff that looks good because I always feel like I have an obligation to top that with anything else I draw afterwards, and I always end up disappointed when I don't.

This is going to be a little weird, but I swear it's going to be funny.
I need an artist who's got a little bit of familiarity with H. P. Lovecraft and his horror work. In Lovecraft's mythos, see, before human beings evolved, there was a civilization of intelligent fish-like beings living in Earth's seas, and they are still there. Those who know of their existence call them Deep Ones. Okay so far? Some isolated towns near the seausually fishing villageshave learned of them, and have contact with them, and sometimes even interbreed with them. The resulting offspring, "Deep One hybrids," tend to get more fishy-looking after puberty, and some even grow gills and feel a compulsion to leap into the ocean and live with their fishy relatives. With me so far? I promise, there's a reason for all this. First picture is what a family of such individuals might look like.
And what I'm looking for is a Deep One hybrid pony, more cute than grotesque, with obvious gill slits and eyes that are obviously a bit wrong. Second and third images show an OC named Ipsywitch from someone's now-defunct Tumblr blog and something along those linesnot an exact copyis what I am imagining. Fourth image is a different aquatic OC pony, but still with the sort of grotesque-cute look I have in mind.
Last element is a Sea Pony, like from G1, but drawn G4-ishly. Remember the Sea Ponies?
