No one intervened when R. Kelly was beaten in a Chicago prison in late August, the musician's attorneys said.
"No one raised a finger" to stop the attack, they said in a Friday court filing. The attacker, who identified himself as Jeremiah Farmer, "roamed a great distance within the [Metropolitan Correctional Center] before carrying out that act, without any opposition. It is undisputed that, as a result, Mr. Kelly has suffered significant physical and psychological injuries."
Kelly was arrested in 2019 on 13 counts of federal child pornography, racketeering, and obstruction. The singer also faces a separate five-count indictment from the Eastern District of New York that charged him with racketeering, and he previously faced 10 charges of criminal sexual abuse.
After the attack, Farmer said that he had "physically beaten Mr. Kelly in [an] attempt to shed media spotlight" on his own case.
A report from the Bureau of Prisons said that a Metropolitan Correctional Center employee ordered the attacker to stop before using pepper spray to stop the incident, CNN reported.
