What would you do if you found thousands of dollars in a piece of furniture you had purchased?

That’s what happened to one local man.

“It still boggles my mind,” said Howard Kirby, customer.

Kirby likes to shop at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Owosso.

He purchased a couch from the store in December for his man cave, but this weekend he made a shocking discovery.

The couch was filled with thousands of dollars in cash.

“I still have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming or something,” Kirby said.

Kerby said he had the ottoman for a few weeks before noticing it was uncomfortable. That’s when his daughter decided to open it up.

“That’s when she started pulling out this,” Kirby said.

A total of $43,170 was found in the ottoman cushion.

That and not turn it in….if it's unmarked bills why turn it in? The cops would likely keep it anyways.

in theory the police keep it in holding for 30 days and publicize that they've recovered funds while withholding the amount

if the owner of the funds shows up and can provide the correct amount, they receive it. If 30 days pass, it's yours

The problem is that with unmarked sums of cash with no attached ID ANYONE could claim it as theirs(well unless someone kept serial numbers of all their bills/etc).

As such, turning in money anyone might try to claim in cases where it's near impossible to prove ownership seems dumb…..it's either going to go right back to the one who found it or be claimed by anyone who thinks they can try and claim it
