A prayer leader in his 70s was stabbed in a London mosque on Thursday and the assailant was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police and mosque officials said.

“The attacker was apprehended by the worshippers until the police arrived and arrested him,” the London Central Mosque Trust said in a statement.

“The muezzin did not sustain any life-threatening injuries but was seriously injured and is being treated at the hospital.”

London’s Metropolitan Police said detectives did not believe the incident was terrorism-related.

The Mayor of Boston has formally requested the Sony Corporation to reconsider its decision to pull out of an upcoming gaming showcase.

Mayor Marty Walsh sent a letter to Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's president and chief executive officer, Friday after the entertainment giant announced Wednesday that it would be canceling its appearance at PAX East while citing fears about exposure to COVID-19, the novel coronavirus.

"We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily," company officials wrote in a statement posted Wednesday. "We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern."

In his letter, Walsh said the risk of contracting the coronavirus in Boston and Massachusetts remains extremely low and that officials have no reason to believe that anyone should cancel their plans to visit the city.

The mayor also said that fears about the coronavirus are fueled by confusion and lack of information, which has led to the growth of anti-Chinese and anti-Asian sentiment in Boston and around the country.

"These fears reinforce harmful stereotypes that generations of Asians have worked hard to dismantle," reads Walsh's letter. "They trigger our worst impulses: to view entire groups of people with suspicion, to close ourselves off, and to miss out on the opportunities and connections our global city provides. Boston is united in our efforts to dispel these harmful and misguided fears."

Oregon still has no cases of the new coronavirus, but local officials are monitoring 76 people who don’t have symptoms of an infection but may have been exposed.

The people are being watched to see if they develop symptoms, the Oregon Health Authority said Monday. So far, the state and local agencies have finished monitoring 178 people who may have been exposed to the disease through contact with a person who was infected or through travel to China. None of them developed symptoms, according to the agency.

“We recognize people are very worried about COVID-19,” Lillian Shirley, director of the OHA Public Health Division, said in a statement referring to the name given the virus. “People need to understand their real risks and feel confident the state and their local health departments are working hard to protect their health.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells Oregon about people returning from China and Oregon then relays that information to the health departments in the counties where those people live, said health authority spokesman Jonathan Modie. The local agencies then contact the individuals and ask them to report if they have any COVID-19 symptoms, which include a fever and cough.

If a person has symptoms within two weeks of the last possible exposure to the virus, they tell the county and then get tested. Two people developed symptoms while under monitoring, Modie said, and both tested negative for coronavirus.

A total of 254 people in Oregon are either currently being monitored or have already gone through two-week monitoring. All but two of them were put on the monitoring list just because they had been to China. The other two had been to China and flew on a plane with a person infected with the coronavirus.

The agency has previously declined to release information about the number of people being monitored, citing laws on patientPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Kobe Bryant’s widow on Monday sued the owner of the helicopter that crashed in fog and killed the former Los Angeles Lakers star and their 13-year-old daughter last month.

The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Vanessa Bryant in Los Angeles Superior Court said the pilot was careless and negligent by flying in cloudy conditions Jan. 26 and should have aborted the flight.

Pilot Ara Zobayan was among the nine people killed in the crash.

The lawsuit names Island Express Helicopters Inc. and also targets Zobayan’s legal representative, listed only as “Doe 1” until a name can be determined.

Vanessa Bryant’s lawsuit asserts that Zobayan was negligent in eight different ways, including failing to properly assess the weather, flying into conditions he wasn’t cleared for and failing to control the helicopter.

The lawsuit was filed as a public memorial service for Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and all the victims, including Zobayan, was being held at the arena where Bryant played most of his career.

Calls to Island Express seeking comment were not answered and its voicemail was full.

The company issued a statement Jan. 30 on its website saying the shock of the crash had prompted it to suspend service until it was appropriate for staff and customers.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash into a hillside in Calabasas on the outskirts of Los Angeles County.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday joined a chorus of Republicans criticizing Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders for comments the Vermont senator made about Cuba during an appearance Sunday on the CBS news show “60 Minutes.”

During the appearance, Sanders said he is opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but that it is “unfair to simply say everything is bad” and pointed to a “massive literacy program” after Fidel Castro came to power.

The comments drew heavy criticism from Republicans, as Sanders leads the Democratic presidential field after Saturday’s Nevada caucuses.

During an appearance Monday morning at Florida A&M University, DeSantis blasted Sanders.

“Any attempts to whitewash the brutality of the Castro dictatorship is totally unacceptable,” said DeSantis, a close political ally of President Donald Trump. “It flies directly in the face of the values of the people throughout this state. And this is a senator who has spoken positively throughout his whole life about the dictatorship there.”

Florida Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have also condemned Sanders’ comments.

With Florida’s large Cuban-American population, Sanders’ comments about Cuba could play an important role in the state’s March 17 Democratic primary and, if he is the ultimate Democratic nominee, in the November general election.

“He puts a number of swing seat congressional and state legislative members in Miami-Dade in a bind. They now have to come out and oppose the potential nominee for president and that’s never a good place to be,” said Steve Schale, a Democratic strategist. “The biggest thing for Democrats is the later generation Cubans are now swing voters. They voted for (former President Barack Obama). They voted for (Hillary) Clinton. We need them in 2020 if we’re going to win the state."

Schale noted the comments aren’t likely to affect Sanders much in the primary next mPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

A scientist speaking at the National Farmers Union conference has argued that living a vegan lifestyle is more damaging to the environment than eating meat.

The Rothamsted Institute’s Graham McAuliffe said that the manner in which tofu — a protein foodstuff made from soy ‘milk’ — is produced has a worse carbon footprint than chicken, pork, or lamb produced for eating, according to an unpublished report.

Dr McAuliffe, who models the environmental impact of foods, said that current accepted research which claims that eating meat is worse for the environment fails to take into account that the human body does not absorb as much protein from plants as it does from meat, meaning that on a vegan diet, a person would have to eat more in order to obtain a healthy amount of protein, according to a report in The Times.

Speaking at the conference in London, the scientist said: “Without a doubt peas and ground nuts always have a lower environmental impact than any livestock products.

“But if you look at tofu, which is processed so there is more energy going into its production, when you correct for the fact that the protein in it is not as digestible compared to the meat-based products, you can see that it could actually have a higher global warming potential than any of the monogastric animals.

“To get the same amount of protein, tofu is worse.”

In the rush to replace insecure, unreliable electronic voting machines after Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential race, state and local officials have scrambled to acquire more trustworthy equipment for this year’s election, when U.S. intelligence agencies fear even worse problems.

But instead of choosing simple, hand-marked paper ballots that are most resistant to tampering because paper cannot be hacked, many are opting for pricier technology that computer security experts consider almost as risky as earlier discredited electronic systems.

Called ballot-marking devices, the machines have touchscreens for registering voter choice. Unlike touchscreen-only machines, they print out paper records that are scanned by optical readers. South Carolina voters will use them in Saturday’s primary.

The most pricey solution available, they are at least twice as expensive as the hand-marked paper ballot option. They have been vigorously promoted by the three voting equipment vendors that control 88 percent of the U.S. market.

Some of the most popular ballot-marking machines, made by industry leaders Election Systems & Software and Dominion Voting Systems, register votes in bar codes that the human eye cannot decipher. That’s a problem, researchers say: Voters could end up with printouts that accurately spell out the names of the candidates they picked, but, because of a hack, the bar codes do not reflect those choices. Because the bar codes are what’s tabulated, voters would never know that their ballots benefited another candidate.

Even on machines that do not use bar codes, voters may not notice if a hack or programming error mangled their choices. A University of Michigan study determined that only 7 percent of participants in a mock election notified poll workers when the names on their printed receipts did not match the candidates they voted for.

ES&S rejects those scenarios. Spokeswoman Katina Granger said the company’s ballot-marking machines’ accuracy and security “have Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

for all of the accusations of Russia hacking the election, never once was this hacking alleged to have been via the tampering of voting machines or doctoring of the ballots

instead it was alleged to have been the hacking of the American mind, the media accusing the American people of being unable to think for themselves if it led to a vote other than what they wanted

Former presidential candidate and self-help guru Marianne Williamson (D) endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Sunday, appearing alongside the socialist senator at his rally in Austin, Texas.

Williamson, who had yet to officially back one of her former contenders, formally endorsed Sanders on Sunday — the day after his big win in Nevada:

“What happened in Nevada on Saturday was extraordinary, and the energy is unquestionably with Bernie,” Williamson said in a statement released on social media.

“A 40-yr old trend of capitalism without conscience – corporate elites and their errand boys in government – have created the inevitable blowback in the form of a political revolution,” she continued.

“That revolution is one that Bernie Sanders now leads, and I want to do everything I can to further its success,” she added. “I am honored to endorse him”:

By Steven W. Mosher

https://nypost.com/author/steven-w-mosher/

At an emergency meeting in Beijing held last Friday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke about the need to contain the coronavirus and set up a system to prevent similar epidemics in the future.

A national system to control biosecurity risks must be put in place “to protect the people’s health,” Xi said, because lab safety is a “national security” issue.

Xi didn’t actually admit that the coronavirus now devastating large swathes of China had escaped from one of the country’s bioresearch labs. But the very next day, evidence emerged suggesting that this is exactly what happened, as the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology released a new directive entitled: “Instructions on strengthening biosecurity management in microbiology labs that handle advanced viruses like the novel coronavirus.”

Read that again. It sure sounds like China has a problem keeping dangerous pathogens in test tubes where they belong, doesn’t it? And just how many “microbiology labs” are there in China that handle “advanced viruses like the novel coronavirus”?

It turns out that in all of China there is only one. And this one is located in the Chinese city of Wuhan that just happens to be . . . the epicenter of the epidemic.

That’s right. China’s only Level 4 microbiology lab that is equipped to handle deadly coronaviruses, called the National Biosafety Laboratory, is part of the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared Thursday that President Donald Trump is the “real winner” of Wednesday night’s Democrat debate.

“How was your night last night?” Bloomberg asked at a political rally as his crowd of supporters laughed. “Look, the real winner in the debate last night was Donald Trump.”

Bloomberg warned that Sen. Bernie Sanders could not win the presidency if nominated as the presidential candidate.

“If we choose a candidate who appeals to a small base, like Sen. Sanders, it will be a fatal error,” he said. “We need Democrats and independents and Republicans to win.”

Bloomberg said Democrats won the House of Representatives in 2018 by relying on a more moderate coalition, repeating attacks on Sanders.

“That won’t happen with pie in the sky promises and proposals that will bankrupt the country,” he said. “Voters don’t want empty talk; they want leadership. They don’t want hand-waving and finger-pointing.”

Bloomberg spoke at a campaign rally in Utah after a poor debate debut at the ninth Democrat debate on Wednesday.

He boasted that he was putting together a coalition to defeat Trump in the general election in Utah, citing Sen. Mitt Romney’s vote to impeach the president as proof that he could win.

“Mitt Romney proved that the Trump fever gripping the Republican party can break here,” he said. “And in November, we’re going to prove that a Democrat candidate for president can compete statewide.”

Bloomberg kicked off his rally in Salt Lake City with a joke about Mormon pioneer Brigham Young.

A pro-North Korea daily praised Academy Awards best picture-winning South Korean movie “Parasite” on Friday, calling it a masterpiece that “starkly exposed the reality” of the rich-poor gap in South Korea.

“Parasite” became the first foreign-language film to win best picture in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards on Feb 9. It won a total of four Oscars, including best director and original screenplay for Director Bong Joon-ho and best international feature film.

“A masterpiece that has artfully and sharply cut through the reality of a handful of loan sharks living well while ruling over an overwhelming majority, who they consider as dogs or pigs, has been recognised as No. 1 in the U.S.- and Caucasian-centric film industry,” the Japan-based Choson Sinbo newspaper said.

The film is a tale of two South Korean families - the wealthy Parks and the poor Kims - that mirrors the deepening disparities in Asia’s fourth-largest economy and has struck a chord with global audiences.

In June 2019, less than a month after “Parasite” began showing in South Korea, North Korean propaganda website DPRK Today had said that the movie was “making people realise again that the capitalist system is a rotten, sick society with a malignant tumor of rich-becoming-richer and poor-becoming-poorer, a society with no hope or future.”

Hilariously enough the irony that evil capitalism allows and celebrates films criticizing it's own system will be lost on the authoritarian North Koreans who would summarily execute anyone so much as complaining about communism.

Some Twitter users are questioning whether a dwarf who appeared in a now-viral video sobbing that he’s the 9-year-old victim of bullies is nothing but a teenage prankster, although other postings appear to back up his heartbreaking tale.

Quaden Bayles — who gained the sympathy of legions of supporters, including actor and fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman — is really 18 and “scammed everybody,” tweeted Jasmein Dowe on Friday, according to several Twitter users who reposted the accusation with some photos of an adult-looking Bayles from his Instagram page. Dowe’s Twitter account appeared to have been taken down later Friday.

But NBC TV’s “Today” show featured an uplifting piece about a clearly little-boy Bayles in June 2016 walking his dog Buddy and saying how the canine helps the dwarf cope with ridicule.

Bayles is missing his two front teeth in the photo, and the show said he was 5 years old at the time.

The Australian TV show “Living Black” also did a report on Bayles’ struggles in April 2015 and featured video footage of him as a little boy at the time.

A Facebook page apparently belonging to one of Bayles’s relatives also shows she shared photos on it in 2012 of Bayles as a baby — and when asked how old he was at the time, Bayles’s mom wrote, “Lil man going on 15 months now bless him!”

But Dowe’s alleged tweet says Bayles “has plenty of money and yeah everyone fell for it.

“Now if I’m wrong please source your link and explain why to me,” she wrote, according to the screenshot. “He’s a Instagram celeb @quadosss and deleted captions pertaining to his 18th birthday post.”

Twitter user shanrrr reposted the tweet and added, “wtf is this? hes 18? and an actor?”

he is 9 years old, but his parents have been trying to exploit him for sympathy and fame on the internet since at least 2015. There are also pictures of him throwing up middle fingers and saying the N word with his mom encouraging it.

This is probably it. He IS 9 years old, he MAY be bullied, but he is definitely being exploited by his mom.

I love how bullying is only bad if there is a visible physical disability or if the heroics are caught on camera. I watched people sit idle while countless “weirdos” were bullied throughout school and then go on to be generals in the social justice army

The Knoxville office of 2020 democratic presidential candidate and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was vandalized overnight Thursday.

WVLT News Friday morning witnessed the front doors of the office painted with expletives and posters that featured the words "authoritarian," "classist" and "oligarch."

The posters featured what appeared to be snippets from news articles on Bloomberg in which he allegedly made derogatory statements about women and people of color in the past alongside words like "fascist," "sexist" and "racist."

Knoxville Police Department said they received a complaint saying the vandalism occurred at the Western Avenue office between 6 p.m. on Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday. There are no security cameras at the office and no witnesses have come forward.

KPD said they are investigating the incident. No suspects have been identified.

National Bloomberg campaign manager Kevin Sheekey released a statement saying Bernie Sanders should condemn the vandalism.

"This latest incident at our Knoxville campaign office is exactly what we've been warning about. We don't know who is responsible for this vandalism, but we do know it echoes language from the Sanders campaign and its supporters. Over the past week, we've seen similar attacks against Mike Bloomberg 2020 offices in multiple states. Fortunately, no one has been injured. But this needs to end before someone gets hurt. We call on Bernie Sanders to immediately condemn these attacks and for his campaign to end the Trump-like rhetoric that is clearly encouraging his supporters to engage in behavior that has no place in our politics," said Sheekey.

Iranians were voting for a new parliament Friday, with turnout seen as a key measure of support for Iran’s leadership as sanctions weigh on the economy and U.S. pressure isolates the country diplomatically.

The disqualification of more than 7,000 potential candidates, most of them reformists and moderates, raised the possibility of lower-than-usual turnout. Among those disqualified were 90 sitting members of parliament who had wanted to run for reelection.

The polls were originally scheduled to close at 6 p.m., but officials extended that to 11 p.m. to give people more time to cast their vote. Friday is a day of rest in Iran, as is the case across most Muslim countries.

Initial results were expected to be announced on Saturday.

Also looming over the election is the threat of the new coronavirus, and many voters headed to the polls with face masks. Iranian health authorities on Friday confirmed two new deaths from the virus, which first emerged in China in December, bringing the total death toll in Iran to four, from among 18 confirmed cases. The first two patients who died were elderly citizens in the city of Qom. Concerns over the spread of the virus prompted authorities in Iran to close all schools and Shiite seminaries in Qom.

Iran’s leadership and state media urged voter participation, with some framing it as a religious duty. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cast his ballot at a mosque near his Tehran office shortly after polls opened at 8 a.m. and urged Iranians to the polls.

Every once in a while we'll hear about a celebrity being stalked by a fan. Usually it is some movie or television personality like Kim Kardashian or famous musical artist like Taylor Swift. It is rare that you hear about someone hounding the likes of people like Bill Gates or Tim Cook, until now.

Apple has obtained a temporary restraining order against a man who has allegedly been harassing several company executives and stalking Tim Cook.

According to an affidavit signed by an Apple security officer, a man named Rakesh “Rocky” Sharma left threatening messages with company executives. At least one of the voicemails indicated that the man “knows” where the executives live. It also threatened that Sharma or someone he knew would resort to gun violence.

“I don’t use ammunition, but I know people who do,” one message said.

The situation “escalated” when Sharma showed up at Tim Cook’s Palo Alto residence on December 4, 2019. Sharma entered through a closed gate with flowers and champagne. He later posted several sexually lewd pictures to his Twitter account tagging Cook in the tweets. Then on January 15, 2020, Sharma again trespassed on Cook’s property, ringing the doorbell. Palo Alto police were called, but the man fled before officers arrived.

The affidavit and other documents were tweeted by tech news site OneZero’s Dave Gershorn, but only after the nonprofit Think Computer Foundation filed a lawsuit to make the documents public. Previously, the court submissions were only available in-person.

NBC News reported that documents were filed with the Santa Clara County Superior Court on February 13, asking for a restraining order against Sharma. The court granted the request, forbidding Sharma from going near Cook, his residence, any of the executive team, or Cupertino headquarters Apple Park. The court order expires Post too long.
